My Omega Seamaster has been with me on over 300 dives. It has become a part of my kit. You only live once so why not wear your watch!

If you don't like shallow silly topics, "move along.... nuthin' to see here."

I am unabashed watch fantatic and last year I got a high end Omega dive watch as a gift. I will be doing my classroom and pool sessions for OW certification in a couple of weeks and am wondering if I will look like the ultimate poseur if I wear my watch to class. I know in the end this doesn't mean a thing and it is a silly question but I gotta ask. I'll probably still wear it no matter what.

Cheers.
There was a great reply to this subject in the current issue of bicycling. The writer wrote a letter to the editor that he thought it was rediculous to see someone riding a $5000 titanium racing road bike around campus with tennis shoes.
The editor promptly pointed out that someone who would complain of such things is shallow, lame, jealous and insecure.

You own a nice dive watch. Wear the watch. To not wear it would be silly, imo. There's nothing wrong with buying high-end anything if you can. Don't feel guilty or insecure because someone might be jealous over something nice you own and think less of you for owning it...it's their baggage not yours. Calling someone a poseur wouldn't be appropriate because they choose to use a high end piece of gear that it's designed to handle. If you buy a cool omega dive watch to make ppl think you dive when you don't, that might be poseurish, but who really cares.

FWIW, I own a nice Omega, though not a dive watch, and a couple of other nice watches. I bought a timex for diving because I knew my wife wouldn't tolerate it.

I'm curious as to why so many think the nice watches are going to be lost. A couple of mine I have difficulties even getting off. Most nice pieces aren't going to have a something that doesn't stay together very well.

I have a Nice tag in my collection...much older model but from a more expensive range......I once had the pin that held the link to the watch face itself fail on me...probably due to abuse as I wear these things (Rolex included) for everyday use. The whole thing simply slid off and fell to the ground and it was a good thing I noticed it. Had it dropped off on grass, I may not have even known or heard!

I have done go-carts, trained for international paintball tourneys, jetskied, worked out, etc etc etc in my expensive sports watches without giving it 2nd thought. THey are meant to be used like that.....My submariner has been shot many a time by paintballs!!...better it than my exposed wrist! lol

Having said that, if such a failure occured on a dive (deep dive), I would have to say good bye to my watch! fat chance of finding it if it goes deep and into silt.....

I am willing to take that risk...however, a good reliable dedicated dive watch that dosent cost more than my entire gear would be a good idea in my future. Heck....I would probably be happier with a watch that glowed better than my Rolexes or my Tag as they are crappy to read in low low light. No need to fiddle with my torch.

Thanks for all the responses. I am pleasantly surprised by the comments people made here, after reading the "Orange Shovel" thread from a few weeks ago.

As for losing an expensive watch on a dive, there are one piece nylon straps (NATO, Zulu) that thread through the springbars that will ensure you don't lose your watch if one springbar breaks. That is what I plan to use when I take my Omega in open water.

My pool and classroom sessions begin in a week! I am studying like crazy!

Cheers.

Expensive watch? Just wait till u dive a bit and realize what gear you want and how much you will need to spend.....

Then go look up some exotic locations which will cost an arm and a leg to get to......

Watch is the least of your worries.....its probably the first decent dive tool which you won't need (or want to) to replace soon
