Exactly How Do I Use Skype There and What Is The Cost to Call US?

I've done the here and seen many post that they just use Skype to call home from Mexico, and I have been all over the Skype site looking for information - but I missing something?

If I take my laptop and microphone with me then go to the Caribe Blu lobby for wireless service or log in at an internet shop in town, do I just phone like I would from home and get charged against my credits? At what rate?

If you call from a skype account to another skype account, you don't pay for the call. Calling a landline will cost you money though. But it's very cheap. I use it a lot.

I know you do, and I understood that much. I have the $3/month option for 10,000 min/mon (they call it unlimited, but it's not!) from the US to any number in US & Canada.

But from Mexico to a US number? How?

Don..... if you are already on an Internet connection, just open Skype up (with you logged into it) and dial the number from inside the program..... it's easy.

Ok, so it does not matter that I am in Mexico on their local system. As long as I have the Skype credit, just log in and dial the US @ 2.1c/min - that's all huh?

No....doesn't matter. The only thing that could happen is that the local bandwidth was too slow to support the service....especially if you use live video like I do talking to my daughter in Holland. As long as the local ISP has the bandwidth you need, you're good to go...and you only pay Skype.

Don, I use Skype from Cozumel regularly. No problems, about 2 cents per minute. Calls to 800 numbers are free. I have DSL at home, but most internet places have high speed connections now. Bring your own earphone/microphone combo and your laptop. Since you are on a Skype plan for calls from the U.S., you may also have to buy $10 worth of regular credit which will last you forever.

There's the rub though. Low bandwidth = nogo. Also, they have to allow you on their network with your lapy, or let you install the SKYPE software on their machine if there is no network option.

Do you have a cell with a windows mobile OS on it? if so than you might look at getting a sim-card with a local cell carrier if they have the required bandwidth. I lived on dial-up AOL for a year once, about as slow as you can go I think, and still used a webcam to the UK some. But no worries; the webcam is not important. I didn't check Caribe Blu's service last time but it seemed relatively fast. I was in room #1 so could use the lobby wireless from the room; this time probly won't bother as much if I have to go down to the lobby to use it. But wanted to know how and the Skype site just does not make it clear. I'll have my cell phone on the Alltel North America plan to call home with as well which was all I needed last time even with lonnnnnng hold time calls checking reservations to escape H.Dean, but good to have more resources than planned needs.

Yeah, I'll buy $10 in credit. My dive bud is in love and he may be the one to be calling home a lot. I did search all of SB for other threads, and while Skype is often mentioned - the other 4 threads with Skype in the title didn't really say much. Now I know and so will the next person who searches.

Nah, if I use my cell, I'll just call. I looked all over the Skype FAQ and finally gave up, sending in a question. Got an email today saying they'd let me know within 24 hours but y'all have covered it well.
