I understand they can sometimes be seen off Monterey. Also called ocean sunfish. It would be pretty cool to see one!

Of course! We see them off Catalina Island too. There were a few just outside the Casino Dive Park a few weeks ago.

I see Mola Molas almost everytime I dive in Monterey Zen

I never have, but a couple for buddies said the saw dozens of small ones at breakwater one time. Unfortunatly, they were all lying on the bottom of floating midwater dying with no fins. They didn't know what it was a 1st-thought it was fishermen, but found out that it was the seals. They had basically wiped them out by catching them and eating the fins then going after the next one leaving the body.

And boy, are they strange-looking! I saw my first mola mola this year, right off of PV at the end of May.

one time, when i was at band camp, oh, wait a minute, wrong thread.

yes, at breakwater as many here mentioned. i saw more dead ones than live ones, though. about a foot across.

Last week off Santa Cruz (I'll check the name of the pinnacle when i get home to my logbook) had one hanging around with us for a while at about 70 ft. Of course that was the only dive in three days (minus a few classes) when I didn't bring a camera!:(

i saw them for the first time yesterday at the metridium fields off the breakwater in monterey. i was pretty excited to see them, they do look pretty weird (a "swimming head"). glad i saw them swimming and not dead after the sea lions got to them
