The mask has to fit your face. Its worth a trip to the LDS to find a group of masks in your price range, and then try them on for size.

Yes, the fit of the mask is very important. Make sure it has tempered glass lenses, 100% surgical grade silicone skirt, etc. All of the masks we carry meet the safe scuba standards, just make sure whatever you get does.
As Divedoggie said, it all depends on what features you want. If you want a dry snorkel to be comfortable and not choke on water when you're doing a surface swim or when you're chasing Dolphins, get a dry snorkel. If you're a strong swimmer and you don't mind water in your snorkel, you can get a much cheaper one without the dry valve. The Aeris Barracuda Dry snorkel is a great one if you go dry, but I recommend getting a neoprene snorkel keeper for it. Aeris put this great little snorkel keeper on it, but it spins when you're in a current while diving so it's kind of annoying.

I agree...go to your Local Dive Shop and try out a few different masks. Sometimes there is quite a bit of difference in fit between masks and its best to just try out what interests you.

Try several masks, get a dry snorkel if you're not a strong swimmer, it makes a huge difference when the waves get choppy.
