I stayed there this past November for similar reasons you are considering it. I would certainly recommend it for a family with non-divers. We found the rooms, food, pools and service very good. The beach is ok but very good by general Coz standards and there is snorkelling available off the beach. Staff from the buffet will give you stale bread for the kids to feed the fish with. As for diving I wouldn't use Scuba Du. IMO rent a car for the week and drive to Blue Angel or have your wife drop you off and pick you up.I think the car is a good option to have to tour the Island and go back and forth from downtown anyways. It is not difficult to drive in and around Coz. From El Coz the cabs will cost you a small fortune to go back and forth everyday.
Enjoy!

Thanks everyone for all the informative inputs. I'd really appreciates it.

If you are not locked into El-Coz. yet. another option for the wife and kid is the Allegro. They have one of the best beaches for a resort on the island, lots of sand.
Also they have one of the pools set up as a water park set-up for the kids.
Now this one is way south of town. Op's will pick you up at the pier.

1 second this idea!! also they are so close to the main reefs you can do 1 tank morning dives !! very short boat rides !!
