Curious if anyone has experience backpacking and/or diving through Eastern Indonesia (east of Sulawesi and flores) and PNG. Liveaboards and resorts are beyond our budget. Anywhere fit the bill? Other out of the way SE Asia advice would also be most appreciated.

Thank you!

have a look: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/indonesia/232923-possible-do-raja-ampat-budget.html

What du you mean with eastern sulawesi? Lembeh, Palu, Togians? Woudl you like to do a homestay? In Sulawesi, accomodation for 5-10$ exist, but not in Raja Ampat or PNG as much as I know. I don't know anything about Flores.

PNG: The most expensive there is the travelling around and not the stay itself because there are no streets between two locations , often. Solution = flight.

PNG and R4 are definitely a destinations, which makes your money bag suffering from annorexia.

On Flores, there's some decent value diving from Labuanbajo, and also Maumere - see www.ankermi-happydive.com (though I've yet to visit Maumere myself).. Not heard of any diveshops further east on Flores, the next area to look into would be Alor. A few posts here on scubaboard, also look at la-petite-kepa.com. Other useful websites to browse include http://www.dutchpickle.com/ for general east indo info, and http://www.sulawesi-info.com/index.php for Sulawesi info and links. Hope this helps.
