I'm new, actually in the middle of the written instructional part of the PADI OW course. Next week I start my confined dives instruction in a nice 90 degree temperature pool....so I'm wearing my shorty.
My question is the open diving part of the class, and most diving in here in Arizona or even a trip over to CA, the water averages 50-60 degrees. I had a 5mm suit in which I used for snorkeling, but everyone I asked they said I would need a 7mm or a Drysuit. The more I researched Drysuit, I found so many positive comments. Most stating they wish they would have invested from the start. I would prefer to be instructed and learn in my own gear. I was going to by a semi-dry wetsuit, but now I can get a good deal on a DUI TLSSE custom wetsuit (he happens to be the same size as me-short) with Bear Undergarments for a great price. Am I stupid to even to be thinking of going into a drysuit this early, and possible using it during my open water. Or let the deal go by. But I would hate to invest in a 7mm, knowing I would be then moving to a Drysuit in the near future. I've also read read the hazards involved in regards to Drysuits. Damn internet, sometime I tend to research the hell out of things, but any advice or feedback would be appreciated.

Talk to your instructor. If he is willing to do your OW in a drysuit, it will just be a good thing. You could suggest that you pay extra to combine the drysuitclass and OW so you get a few extra dives.

Here in Norway everybody learns to dive in a drysuit, so shouldn't really be a problem with the right instructor.

it's quite common in PNW, Great Lakes region, New England, actual England, and obviously Scandinavia for students to learn in drysuits. If the rest of your buddies aren't learning in a drysuit, then the instructor may not teach you in a drysuit, in that case, rent a 7mm for checkout dives and find a mentor or ask the instructor to zip you through the drysuit course. Similar to technical diving, in that if you have any remote interest in it, just go straight to backplate/wing and the like, if you feel like a drysuit is in your near future and you can afford one, just get one off the bat and be done with it, no sense in wasting money on "step up" gear.

We do drysuit classes concurrently with OW all the time here in NJ. I personally started diving dry on dive #10; I don't think dive 1 is much earlier.

Best of luck - Ray

Bob, that is my dry suit we are discussing :). I can give you an even better deal if you want to deal with me through this website as I won't have to pay eBay the 10% and I will pass that saving on to you. Same deal off of eBay would be $630 plus $30 shipping. Shipping is a little higher as I get a discount on eBay as the shipper. Thats $630 for the dry suit and underwear.

As the other poster stated I am sure that you would not be the first person to request certification in a dry suit. (I myself did mine in a dry suit).

That is exactly what I did! Did a pool session and my open water checkout dives in a drysuit.
After trying on a 7mm farmer john and jacket in the store, I went right to a drysuit.
I'm so happy I did.
I never dove a wetsuit.
I dive my trilam drysuit all over the world. I have enjoyed diving my drysuit in waters from 85*F to a low of 41*F.
Just wear the right undergarments. Use Fourth Element as a guide.

How good is the deal on the drysuit?

I am offering him a DUI TLSSE with good seals and a Bare hi-loft undergarment for $630 off eBay and $700 on eBay. I started diving dry but found that I just did not enjoy the quarry's and now limit myself to the caribbean and have no use for the suit.

Craig66, that's funny...one of my stops was the LDS to ask them about the class but they were closed for the Holiday. Home now, you can email me at bob.lifepath@gmail.com or include your number we can just talk too.

Have you tried diving off shore here in Jersey?
