Given the amount of diving I do, I very rarely drink after diving because it will end up being BEFORE the next day's diving! I always hydrate myself quite a bit before, during and after. If I do have some wine or a few buffalo milks, I also hydrate myself. If I've had too much, I cancel my dives for the next day (and that means I'm missing "work" because I was drinking too much the night before).

I as do most divers, consume alcohol after dives.
I only have a couple buddies who have a beer after diving. Better than 75% of my buddies don't drink at all.

It is kind of funny that in the diving world today we are worried about drinking after a dive. Back in the "old days" some of these pioneers use to jump in the water fully tanked and not give it a second thought. Now we as a dive community have come full circle and are more concerned about the physical aspects of the sport. It's kind of amazing that the sport has gotten to this level in such a relatively short period of time.

Dive medicine and physics understanding have come a long way since the early days of hardy, macho divers. There is more information about the effects and causes of DCS today than back then.

Remember that diving tends to dehydrate you, and dehydration is especially bad in diving. Alcohol also dehydrates you. Be sure to drink plenty of H20 to compensate.

Some of you guys are soo up tight. Lots of things are not good for the body but do not kill you. I live to enjoy every day to the fullest and to hopefully live several more. And this discussions has nothing to do with driving home after a drink. Thats why you bring a dive buddy along. lol

Well, my instructor (also a personal friend) brought along three beers...one for each of us...as a celebratory thing. He didn't realize I don't drink. He took no issue with enjoying his though. Whether or not it is good for you, who cares.

Alcohol is what is known as a vasoldilator - meaning it dilates blood vessels. That's why some people experience a warmth and flush effect when drinking. If you are already experiencing mild dcs, alcohol will in fact, hasten the symptoms. Hop in a jacuzzi and that too will dilate blood vessels. So, I'm not saying don't drink at all after diving, but I am saying if you think you are already feeling a little weird, I'd skip the beers and the jacuzzi!

The booze I can do without, but as the great patriot said, "Give me spa, or give me death!"
