Gang,

I just got back from my annual 10 day trip to Coz. 30 dives total since we lost a few due to Ernesto (the storm, not the fajita place).

Anyway, far fewer lionfish than last year. Last year our DM would spear a dozen or more on every dive. This year we didn't see a dozen total over the entire trip. I suppose it could be due to the DMs spearing them but that seems unlikely. Anybody know? Perhaps they've developed a natural predator?

Thanks!

-Charles

I saw none on the reefs and several on every shore dive last month so I think it's human predation.

They're still at Coz in boggling numbers...just not where you're diving.

All the best, James

2 different DMs told me that too - the Lion Fish have adapted to divers hunting them, so they are (1) going deeper and (2) going away from the Marine Park area. One said there are many around the cruise ship piers. He's gone on a Sunday and seen them.

going away from the Marine Park area.

Suits me. I realize it isn't a real solution but at least the smaller fish, seahorses, etc will have a chance now in the Marine Park.

I heard a bunch were seen right after Ernesto. We only saw one this week which is on the low side.
