We used to do that but on our last 5 or 6 trips we have just hired a taxi van for the day. I got really tired of having to be the designated driver, and with ~8 of us pitching in (The Thundering Herd) it's not very expensive.
That sounds like a great option. Our last trip we stayed in town the entire week and concentrated entirely on diving, relaxing by the pool and eating. Next trip we plan to do the same. The SI on the water or at beach clubs plus the lunch break at a resort between morning and afternoon dives gives us all the beach time we usually need.

After 15 years of visits to Cozumel..1 - 3 times per year, and lodging "IN" town from Hotels, B & B's and Condo's, we gave Residencias Reef a try last November... What we discovered is yet another option for lodging that we truly enjoyed and is perfect for what we are looking for at this stage of the game ! Basically we confirmed what I tell folks all the time in that choosing where you stay is best determined with what type of visit and activities you have in mind. :)

My recommendation for something comparable to RR, would be to check out El Cantil Condos @ www.elcantilcondos.com or Palmar Condos @ www.cozumelme.com (Matt and Elizabeth are fantastic). We have stayed at both places many times and find the condos and amenities fit our needs very well. The biggest differences between the two are:

Price: Palmar is less $ than El Cantil

Diving: El Cantil has a dedicated pier for pick up for SOME Dive ops (Inquire directly to your Dive Op). Off street/Garage parking is also available. The dive op we used for our last Palmar stay arranged pick up on Melgar in front of the building. (Tres Pelicanos)...otherwise..rent a car (Great Parking at Palmar or grab a taxi)
You can also check out VRBO, Flipkey or Home Away for listings to these properties as well.

Access to town: Palmar is a "long-ish" walk into town, but can be done. However...taxi's are always going by to hailing one is usually not a problem. Just be firm with what you pay. As with any cab ride, tell the cab driver the actual rate and if the driver wants more, then keep walking..... El Cantil is easy walking distance to In Town. Mega and Chedraui are equal distances across the stree.

Amenities: Both Palmar and El Cantil are lovely. El Cantil may have an edge just because the balconies are direct ocean view, has a dedicated pier and a bit of "box-o-beach". However...the Palmar's balcony view is from across Melgar but it really is still a very nice view. PLUS, the POOL at Palmar is A-Mazing !!! Huge to say the least. There is also and XOXO on the street level that has all the incidentals you may need.

Regardless of you lodging choices, Best Wishes for a Fantastic Vacation !

You are very welcome ljwillia. :) Should you wish for any more info or even alternate ideas to lodging, please feel free to ask. As mentioned, DH and I have stayed at various B & B's, Condo's and Hotels.. All of which either met or exceeded our expectations and vacation needs. :thumb:

@mediumone How large is the unit you are (were) in? Loved cvchief's place. It's just too big for us.

They're all the same. We closed off the 2nd and 3rd bedrooms, and lived in the LR, DR, MBR, MBth, KIt, and Patio (we were on the ground floor). The two bedrooms were off to the side, so the floor plan still flowed and made sense.
