Since both 1st and 2nd stages are inside the "can" they are not in contact with water so they are very resistant to freeze up.
 
Something to keep in mind about double hoses is that mechanically they aren't that much different than single hoses, (at least the two stage ones anyway). The big difference is that one puts the second stage right in front of your mouth and the other places it back by your shoulder blades. There are pros and cons to both locations.
 
I am taking my Mistral 2 out this weekend...Riding along on my youngest sons check out dives.
