Hey Sharkman,

We just got back from a great trip to Bonaire. And as I said earlier, we were in Coz a month ago. Wow, these are two very different places.

Overall, I think Coz was more relaxing for us. In Bonaire, we dove so much we were exhausted by the end of the week. 26 dives in 6 days.

Bonaire has easy access to incredible shore diving. The shore sites were every bit as good as the boat dives. We did some of both each day. All the dive shops have a rate for unlimited shore diving. So we found ourselves going back in the water a lot.

In Coz, we only did boat dives. The cost for the boat dives is higher than the unlimited shore dives in Bonaire so we did not do as many dives. That is why I say Coz was more relaxing.

As for the diving, they are very different. Coz is the drift dives. Very easy to do but make sure you keep your eyes open. If you miss something, there is no way you want to swim back against the current to try to see it.

Bonaire has almost no current. So it is easy to hang out in one spot and watch all the action. And there is lots of action to see. The coral is incredible (better than Coz). And the sheer number of fish is amazing.

Coz had more bigger fish though, like sharks, turtles, barracuda, rays. Bonaire had more volume of fish and lots of interesting little things to look at (like banded shrimp and Christmas trees). Visibility was much better at Coz (80+ feet) than Bonaire (40-50 feet).

The soft coral at Bonaire is amazing to see. There is so much and it is so big. Lots of colors and variety of coral.

We found the night diving at Coz to be better than Bonaire. There seemed to be more lobster and octopus in Coz at night. But Bonaire had eels out the whazoo. It seems like they were everywhere.

Boat dives are nice. All you do is carry your stuff to the boat and let someone else take you to the spot, help get your gear ready, drop over the side and enjoy.

But then shore dives are nice too. You do have to carry your stuff out to the water. But then you are on your own schedule. No one telling you where to go ro for how long. You move at your own pace and do what you want to do.

I can not say that one was better than the other. They are different and the best thing to do is to experience them both. Mexico is cheap so I know we will go there again and again. But the easy shore diving in Bonaire is calling us to come back too.

Enjoy your trip.

I've been to Cozumel 6 times, and Bonaire twice. I agree with your comparison to a tee.
Maybe the only difference would be we had much better visabilty in Bonaire, then the 50 feet you are describing.
Other then that, great comparison!

I am surprised to see that the viz was so bad for you in Bonaire. I have heard many reports praising the conditions there, many with 100+ ft of viz. I guess its all about timing. 40-50 still has to be better than quarries I am use to.

Catain Don's was our second choice. If we were to go all-inclusive, we would have gone there because the restaurant is supposed to be the best on the island.

Just went to Bonaire in Sept '02 and found Capt. Don's to be the least appealing food we had the whole time. It was very much the off season, so maybe their chef was on break or something. Just tellin' it like we saw it. (But don't miss out on Captain Don's slide show... a really unique experience: much more of a history lesson slash adventure story than what you might expect. We saw not a single slide of fish! But it's a different show every time.)

On the other hand, the Lion's Den at the Lion resort was outrageously good. We went there once, then went back the last night so we could end the trip on an extra high note. Both our meals both times were tops, and the prices were reasonable.

Also cool about that restaurant: it overlooks the very nice-looking diveshop and pier, so while eating you see boats going/coming, shore divers heading in/out, flashes in the distant water from night photographers, and since the water is lit, just look down and see fish. "Charlie" a 4-foot something (forget what) shows up all the time. Really cool.

Just my $.02 on eating in Bonaire.

Oh, here's that restaurant:

He is about 5 ft long tarpon. I have done several nights dives with him as an escort. The first time you look over and see him less the 3 ft from your side it's a little scary but I look forward to his company now. He looks a LOT bigger in the water hehehe

Both are superb. I prefer Buddy dive as it has a drive in tank pickup.

Stayed at Don's last April loved it... Wife and I paid the extra $100 for the unlimited nitrox, 3-5 dives a day no so tired...
Dive the hooker Great dive, charlie fun to dive with and watch eat... Wife loved to be able to solo at Don's, she hates to be pulled here and there or haveing to keep up with others... Slideshow was Great, stories were better (Don tells great stories)

SO go to Don's and have a GREAT time
:D :D :D
