It's not just diving that may cause you to call it a day either. I was DM for a class and one of the students who was ALWAYS early during class hadn't shown up for the OW dives. The instructor called his house and his parents said he had been gone for over 2 hours (it's a 45 min drive to the quarry). Needless to say we were worried. He finally showed up after another hour, he had gotten lost--his parents didn't want him driving on the highway (he was almost 20) so they gave him directions to get there using back roads and the directions were bad. He was so flustered with being late that the instructor told him he wasn't diving because his stress level was just too high. He protested but she was firm and told him she would make the time up with him the next weekend. He just wasn't in any shape mentally to get in the water even though the stress was not scuba related.
