I had finished diving and was having lunch nearby.

I was at Point Lobos Thursday, what day were you there?

MikeFerrara:
Yes, I'd guess that wearing doubles for the first time in your DIRF class would be a bad move.

Mike - I respectfully disagree. I took my Fundies class in doubles, it was only my 2nd dive in them. IMHO, why not test yourself with the rig you plan on diving? I do have 3 steel single tanks, but I don't plan to dive singles again pretty much for the same reasons you posted earlier in this thread. :14:

Sure, I looked like a fool, and I probably would have been much better in my single tank rig, but where's the challenge in that? :D

MikeFerrara:
I even had a rescue student once who did the class in a sidemount rig because that's what he dives in.
That must've been interesting, how did it go?

With all the posts here insulting recreational divers' gear choices via the point system, how can one not believe that DIR divers are jerks?

Well, fairly easily, I hope. I don't think it was so much DIR vs the rest of the world as it was common sense vs the mass market.

Ditto. But it was my fourth dive in doubles.

I started diving in May '04 and just passed 100 dives.
And I make fun of everyone.
But I did that before I ever started diving. :D

With all the posts here insulting recreational divers' gear choices via the point system, how can one not believe that DIR divers are jerks? DIR divers are a very tiny minority of the diving population, yet the signal to noise ratio is so large that they need protection from flaming.

Redhat -

All of that is done very tongue in cheek. It's a joke, not meant to insult.

Kim:
Of course from how I understand it you are never really diving a single tank in DIR - the other one is on your buddies back. (I'm not DIR though so I could be wrong!)

I certainly hope that's not peculiar to DIR. Myself, I teach it from square one.

Had this one character on a dive boat in Coz one year. Had alllll the lastest gear which was fine by me but arrogant as all hell. Thought he knew everything about everything. Anyway,,the end of the dive comes and I'm hanging at 15 feet for a safety stop. Jist minding my own business when this beautiful new and expensive Nikonis camera comes drifting past my face. (ya know the currents in Coz).

Soooooo, I reach out grab the camera and when times up climb back in the boat. I discreetly put the new found treasure down beside me and ask out load,,,"Now did anyone loose anything on that dive. True to form good ole mister know it all jumps up and shouts,,,"Oh my God my Nikonis is gone"

Ya know the SOB didn't even offer to buy me a beer afterwards. But oh the satisfaction I got was almost persverse.

Many people - maybe even most - do DIR-F in single tanks I thought.

Kim- I'd be willing to bet that most divers take Fundamentals in a single tank rig.

However GUE advocates diving a balanced rig, whether it is single or doubles.

... another thing I've learned from this thread is just to shut up and go get wet.

True. It's when the water gets crunchy and you can't get wet any more that the trouble starts.

Painting any group with a broad brush whether they be recreational divers with jacket bc's and split fins, or DIR diver's with their setups is just wrong.
