This thread is turning far too nice for me to continue getting any enjoyment from it. If DIR divers don't like verbal assaults then maybe they should keep from worshipping the jerk that threw the first stones and continues to throw them today, though he does not have the back bone to stand up and repeat his dribble in front of others that would have the fortitude to call him on the crap spewing from his mouth. I am so sick of hearing DIR divers whine about being abused when their facist leader with his over blown ego stirs the pot the most. Now there are some very respectable DIR trained divers that do respectable things with out talking any crap about anyone else, just as there are others trained by other orgs. that do the same.

Painting any group with a broad brush whether they be recreational divers with jacket bc's and split fins, or DIR diver's with their setups is just wrong.

I agree and I don't think that rec divers have a problem with DIR rigs. Some DIR divers have a problem with rec rigs. And they say so - quite often. I really don't understand this split fin aversion. Splits are my fin of choice for tooling around a Carribean reef. You guys prefer to use the same set of gear for every dive and other divers perfer to use different fins and BCs for different dives.

There are people here promoting DIR with an evangelistic zeal that gets quite old, even if it is tongue-in-cheek on the face of it.

The original post had nothing to do with gear and everything to do with attitude. I read it as criticism of DIR divers calling other divers strokes while, as it appeared to the poster, their gear was inappropriate for the diving environment. The fact that so many DIR divers jumped on the defense bandwagon makes the system appear cultish.

I agree and use some DIR principles and reject others. I'm not anti-DIR, but simply trying to point out that DIR arrogance alienates people.

I was going to respond to redhat....but nevermind.

I only just took fundies in September and I"m already tired of the DIR attacks.

I would be willing to bet that most folks here ("DIR divers" or not) have not met GI. I would also be willing to bet that most folks on here (again "DIR divers" or not) have not read the rec.scuba archives of many years ago. I know that he holds no office at GUE, the agancy most associate w/ DIR ,and as far as I know the GUE curriculum does not included lectures on him.
So how does a "DIR diver" today "worship the jerk"? I dont know.

And if this new batch of GUE trained people do searches in archives of email that happened (before I even started diving) and finds that this guy really is a jerk, now what? should we just say screw it and go see our local PADI instructor instead?

Come on guys just abit of sence and a realistic out look on things is all it takes.

I strongly agree that the whole "point system for gear" thing was kinda rude.

<g> Reminds me of something that fellow Winnipegger Mashall Mcluhan once said:

"All generalizations are false. Including this one."

Funny thought he was a featured speaker at a GUE function a week or so ago and was the main justification for charging $300.00 plus to listen to his drivel. He is also back with the latest DIR cd's released. To me that is having him connected as strong as ever to GUE & the DIR concept. I guess to others using the wind bag as thier mouth piece does not mean a connection to the agency.

I was in Alexander Spring which has no cave system that is accessable. I saw three DIR divers with full gear in the basin. Later I saw a fellow with three regulators, three SPGs and three computers, one on each arm and another on one of the SPG and he had an extra snorkel and an extra mask! I don't think he was DIR, not sure exactly what he was doing. The DIR guys however had the long hoses, full double sets with isolation and multiple backups with lights and extra lghts. I thought at the time maybe they were just trying to get their gear sorted out before doing a cave dive somewhere else. Then later I figured they dive that way all the time, who knows, maybe the guys in the origin of this thread were just trying to get their gear sorted before a serious dive.
Off Pensecola on a charter I saw two groups of DIR again in full outfits with doubles and lights to dive 80 feet of water on a rusted hulk Liberty Ship. The old wreck is great for fish viewing but has no penetration that warrants such gear. I thought the DIR open water config was a single aluminum 80 and 40 inch hose? They were nice fellows and had fun I suppose. Is that sort of gear really needed for that dive? N
