RJP, yes agree. Personal diving is fun (minus the rinsing, etc.). Assisting with courses is fun and work, with the emphasis on the latter. A lot of things that are fun also involve work. I used to tell my beginning band students that every year.

2. When you train as a DM you stop diving for yourself OR FOR FUN and you
start to dive for others. - you become a member of the team. Total BS as to the first two points and only to a degree for the third. The team should create an atmosphere of welcome and support

I interpret this to mean that when you are performing in the role of DM the goal is not for you to have fun. You have a job to do. You might enjoy it but that is irrelevant. If you are guiding you are to give the guidee an enjoyable safe dive not take off on what you want to do or into situations that make them uncomfortable.

There are a number of sources of information that when I did DM I was expected to read on my own. These were then discussed and question answered but there were suppositions about prior training and self learning as part of the course.

Just saw Tbone's earlier post so this just repeating what he said.

I agree again with Jim. A couple of times when "taking up the rear" on OW course dives I have picked up a shell, which of course is my passion. But that was a bonus and not at all planned.
