Yes it does end for many divers. Tech/Cave diving is not a right of passage and doesn't have to be done to be a happy, safe diver. I have had my set of gear for several years and it serves me well for the kind of diving I like to do.

I gotta agree with Chris on this one... :D

I stopped spending money on diving gear and training awhile ago. I'm set. I don't have an insatiable desire to go deep, or go tec or go rebreather or any of that stuff. I don't feel the pangs of an incomplete journey or any of the melodramatic crapola people try to feed me. I'm not buying the whole "I want you on my team" thing I get from time to time for the dive stores I frequent. I'm not interested in teaching, or becoming a dive master or master diver or master of my domain or any of that stuff. I want to be a recreational openwater single tank diver with mad skills. That's the goal.

For some of us (I include Chris here) we've reconciled ourselves that we're ok not dancing in the decotec - and all the stuff that goes with that (training, gear, 275 minutes of deco for 14 minutes of BT at 400'.) I'm OK with that.

NOW - I do spend money on diving. Trips (dive boats, ferries to the islands, etc.) and most recently I'm exchanging dollars (sold land camera rig, purchased UW rig) but my gear and training are pretty much done (with the exception of maintenance stuff.)

Make the call, buddy. I was restless until I identified my objectives... now I sleep much better.

Yeah..let me know how that goes....I just bought one too, and I can't seem to stop thinking how I want to turn certain areas of the house into a mini dive shop. The only limiting factors are the kids and the house...but that isn't stopping me from upgrading my entire kit in a few weeks.

Not trying to hijack the thread :offtopic: but Big-t.......sorry to hear about the death of your friend NASCAR. I loved him too! We'll all miss him a great deal. I really loved the way he kidded us all and his dry sence of humor.

That's a whole other hill of beans.

Mo2Vation has it right, it all depends on what your overall dive objectives are. I tend to want to go deeper, do different, try new things. This has an equipment cost to it, and I am willing shoulder that for now. On the bright side, it still hasn't cost me quite as much to buy SCUBA gear as my pending divorce. And I'm having lots more fun with my gear.

Don't worry folks. Once Tony George gets slapped around in court today in Indiannapolis, you're going to see the Open Wheel Racing Series take the CART series to a whole new level...

Long live CART - Die, IRL, Die.

OK - now back to diving. And no - the spending doesn't stop. :)

sorry to hear about....
Yeah...I guess I could change it to death of the Winston Cup, b/c we know that has no chance of resurrecting. I actually saw decently worded ad last night on Fox..."We've opened a new chapter with the Nextel Series"...that sounded wierd, but at least NASCAR's admitting to the huge change, though they stand by the fact that the "Chase" is not a playoff....the last 10 races are going to suck royal dog doo.

I'm excited about Daytona....only 18 days......at least EVERYONE wants to win Daytona.

Just wait until her lawyer tells you she wants your gear!!

From what i have budgetted over the next few years it looks like about 3k on training, somewhere around 1-1.5k on first rig, subsequent cost for further stuff, another 4-500 on misc other bits of gear, maintenance, and who knows what on travel/trips! This is cos i am only OW and want a lot more than that, have only the basic gear i left OW training with - and these are just estimates at the moment! I reckon i will spend about 50-100 per month on trips, plus shore diving, plus one major vacation diving per year (say 1.5-2k). That is making my credit card very unhappy, my creditcard company happy, but is also giving me air miles to use on these trips!!

Ps. I dont think it will stop after the expense i have estimated, but that is what is in the future plans at the moment.

Trips, maintenance, camera gear, ferries... Yeah right, you're done...hee hee hee...

saying:
...I don't need to spend thousands and thousands of dollars on stuff anymore.

That's what I thought, too...I was really happy with my gear selection and was focusing (er, pun) on my u/w photo skills and doing liveaboards in cool places.

But, then I got the opportunity to do several tech courses with a top-notch instructor so I thought, why not...? Well, all the rec gear needed replacing...DIN regs, larger wing, spools, lift bags, drysuit and accessories, different fins, can light, deco bottles, doubles, etc etc..I don't even want to add up the costs.

It's opened up an entirely new phase of learning and my skills are improving greatly, so I have no regrets about spending the dough. What good is money if you don't spend it on stuff you enjoy?
