I won't let someone borrow my equipment except something benign like fins. Letting someone borrow something else is too worrisome, not only if something happens...but also in how they would treat my equipment. I take very good care of it. Others I've seen with their own equipment don't treat it quite as well.

I loan equipment all the time, and I don't worry about it.

I used to dive with a group of tech divers, and we shared what we had all the time. We called it "team resources." I would not hesitate to do it again.

I think at that level, I wouldn't worry so much about it but everyone I know is either not yet certified or newly certified and/or doesn't know what to do with the gear.

That's completely different. I would absolutely not lend gear to someone who is not certified to use it.

I will lend stuff to friends I might be diving with, or who might ask to borrow something. Usually it's just tanks. Last time it worked out well for me as the tanks were do for their vis. The friend that needed them had the vis' done.

I have not leant equipment to students.

I have a spare set of AL-80s. (I dive HP-100s) I lend them to buddies as long as they are returned full.

When I was just starting diving I had my first trip to the Keys planned and developed a reg issue. A local diver I did not know then lent me one of his. I was deeply appreciative and it made a very positive impression on me on diving culture. I now know him well. He is able to service all his equipment. I have lent my pony to a DM on the boat so he could unhook since the regs he had available had just failed the original DM who had to make an emergency assent from 90 ft. (Yes, the reg failed again and he used the pony). But I knew him well.

I do not lend my own personal regs or cameras. But I have only the one set.

To the precise point of the OP....

It's not about having to pay off for a successful lawsuit, it's about the cost of defending yourself. Further, this is why most defendants, liable or not, simply settle to avoid the attorneys fees.

I'd loan them the tanks (without my name on them) but make sure there were no witnesses. ;)
