If people didn't push the limits with diving, we'd still be stuck on land.

People now try to dive to 1,200 feet on scuba, and they also die. People sit underwater for 9 straight days and get very cold.

I agree with both of you to some extent. The thing is that S.C.U.B.A. records today aren't really pushing any limits. To extend Rhone Man's example, we already have divers who spend 9 days underwater and we already have divers that go to 1200 feet. We even have divers that spend 9+ days underwater at 1200 feet... they just dont do it on scuba. We have been there, done that and through experience, know how to do it safely.

With that said, I like the idea of deepest scuba depth/time records in the sense that it can encourage development of new equipment that allows us to go further. Is it really pushing the boundries if all you're doing is bringing down a few more tanks than the last guy? Now, someone trying to dive deeper/longer using a new device (the magical oxygen-stealing regulator thing for lack of a better example), that would be interesting.
