As I read in my OW book that "Role #1: Never hold you breath", is that possible? I mean, what if you need to stand still to see something or lets say to picture something?

What do you all do?

Ok. don't tell anyone, but yes I do sometimes hold my breathe. Not how you think though. You can hold your breath without shutting your throat.
When you hold your breath and try to push out with you lungs, you can feel the pressure on you tongue and throat.

Now try to hold your breath with you mouth open. You do this by controlling your diaphram and this is the only way you should do it on scuba (if at all). You should be thoughrouly confident that you are doing this correctly before trying it in the water. The key is to not close your throat or mouth.

Your post seems to infer that you are already holding your breath on scuba and it can be very dangerous.

No you don't hold it.
But use your head.
For a pic some do but at the bottom of a breath not the top. You can't change depth or have big swells go over you. It's a very dangerous practice that unless you are absolutely sure of what your are doing, DON'T.

On any diving, not just SCUBA, it's all equal.

I once did a lot of breath holding on a dive in Hawaii. I was drifting along on the reef and started hearing whale songs. It was so beautiful, several whales all around me singing, and my bubbles were so loud... So I just hung there in one place for about 10 minutes, holding my breath as much as I could, listening to the music.

(disclaimer) But don't ever hold your breath on scuba or you could die.

As long as you don't rise in the water column you can hold your breath all you want.

Don't ever hold your breath.

Yes, there are a lot of times that I do, and they are all times when I know exactly where I am in the water column and know that my depth is not changing what-so-ever. And yes, it is 'held' with my throat open so that air would still escape if I rose.

But as a general rule, until you truely -know- better... never hold your breath.

I don't hold my breath after an inhale when Scuba Diving, but I do after an exhale, to take a picture. I do hold my breath when driving south on highway 5 just outside of Coalinga :D

Had that pleasure once, too. Have to go back and hear that again sometime.
