While searching on how to avoid the tourist trots, I read that one of the most common causes of getting sick in MX is eatting the salsa. Say it isn't so!! Last time I was in MX (Puerto Vallarta) I was very careful with the food and water, but ate every scoop of salsa I could find - and I got sick on the last day. Could it have been the salsa??
Truthfully, I don't know it I can do it - not eat the salsa. Come ON, this is Mexico!
Before I start to cry at the thought of going on the salsa wagon, tell me you eat all the salsa you want in Cozumel and you don't get sick

Frankly I view "intestinal adaptation" as a part of the trip, so I eat what's good the first day - for COZ that means the salsa, guacomole and the mixed cevice are included. At the first sign of discomfort I pop an Imodium and by day three I'm acclimated to the local intestinal flora & fauna. :)
"To enjoy the flavor of life take big bites. Moderation is for Monks." (Lazarus Long)
But do not do as I do. You will get some horrible intestinal disease and ruin your whole stay if not your whole life. Don't drink the water, cook everything until it's shoe leather before you eat it.

We made a point of eating as much salsa as possible - no tummy troubles. Of course, if you eat some that is hotter than you are used to you might get some ickies...;)

I eat the salsa at least 3 times a day. On my eggs at breakfast even. And no trip to Cozumel would be complete without the east side salsa tour...

simple traveling food rules.

eat where there are lots of people.

dont eat anything bigger than a chicken in places where ther may not be good refrigeration. Anything else is fair game.

Get used to it. You are not a real traveller until you have had explosive bowels and cr*pped yourself in public..

Take plenty of immodium and drink lots of water. use immodium at the first rumble, before long bus trips or any other situation where explosive bowels and the absence of facilities could expose you to public humiliation.

University of Texas did some extensive foodborne testing in Coz and found the most common contaminated food was the salsa.

I have been to Coz three times now and come home ill twice. The last was the worst as it took almost a week to recover.

The first time I went to Coz, 8 years ago, to do my OW cert, I got sick..after my cert was done. (Thank God)

I've never been sick in any way since. I love the salsa. I usually eat anything and everything insight when I'm there.

yep...ate the salsa at the hotel, jeannies waffles, coconuts and anywhere else we went..we both didnt get sick...should i be scared on the trip in august???
