Hi all,

I'm planning on taking a break from corporate life as a result of the "great recession" and doing my DMT in the bay islands. I'm not sure whether to consider Roatan or Utila for my DMT but I've spent some time on Koh Tao and really loved the laid-back diving lifestyle there. That was a few years ago, however, and not sure if I'm too old for a backpacker place like Utila or if I'd get more out of being in Roatan?

Any thoughts or suggestions for the best shops or which location might be better suited for a 28 year old who wants to do a lot of diving in a few months time? I did really like buddha view in KT - just nice being around lots of people and having the collegiality, but I also want to dive with people who take their jobs seriously. Tough choice but I'm really looking forward to it! Can't wait to escape the monotony of suits and paperwork!

Thanks!

Is this combined with an EMT or are you one already?
I envy you doing this course, as I think it si a good thing to see a diver going to the dive medicine part of diving. I wish I could help you in making a choice.

Oops I think I used the wrong terminology. I was talking about my divemaster training - I have heard the trainees referred to as DMTs. I know there are a LOT of similar questions about this on this forum, but I didn't see any about exactly how old/young the crowds are between the two islands. Thanks!

Hi there burtongirl,

I work at Coconut Tree Divers. We currently have seven instructors and six DMTs. The shop offers four dives a day with regularly scheduled night dives on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It's very common for our DMTs to get 100+ dives during their course. B/c we are a busy shop, there is lots of diving to be done. Luckily, we are still small enough to provide excellent customer service without feeling like it's a mill of sorts. We are a close group who pride ourselves with great service and a strong adherence to safety. We also have a great time. We are not the only place who can deliver on these things, as wherever you choose will likely do as much. Many of us who work here have traded the corporate career life for that of a PADI Pro. It's awesome!!!!

I say you come visit both Utila and Roatan, dive with a couple dive ops, and choose where you feel most comfortable. Don't get caught up with sending a deposit to secure your spot. They are always available. You can find some real cheap housing (i.e. a dorm room for $5) until you find a more long term place.

You can read all about our shop via the website and should you have any specific questions, feel free to send them my way.

In terms of the crowds, Utila tends to have a younger crowd. I'd likely view that as a positive thing. Both places have lots to offer and I hope you get to choose based on personal experience.

Good luck with your decision and with the successful completion of your DM course.
