There is no PADI policy that covers a boat operator offering a "convenience" service like on boat gear set-up. It is commonly offered in resort areas frequented by vacation divers - I have never seen it offered in the NE/Mid-atlantic area. I have never had any one offer to do it for me that minded when I politely declined their assistance.

As far as liabilty in the event of gear failure, that's why dive ops and DMs carry insurance. But I would think that to lose in a lawsuit, they'd need to show that you did something to cause the failure. Gear assembly just isn't that complicated and may improve your tip.

YMMV,

Jackie

Peter will just have to put up with dive gear in the room.

NO! NO! NO!

There is no reason the gear can't be properly stowed upon returning to the beach. Just because the DM's aren't going to put our gear together doesn't mean it has to be stowed in our (tiny) room! I've got too much camera and computer gear to keep in the room for us to also have all that other junk that merely provides us with life sustaining oxygen while we are diving.

Don't worry Peter, they will have someplace secure to store Lynne's gear. She can still set it up and everything but it doesn't have to go in the room. Just tell them that you want to do set up yourselves...:D

I set up my own gear and customers on my boat set up their own gear. I will switch it over between dives and do the break down and cleaning when we get back to the dock. On the other hand, if it's my rental gear, I set it up, switch it over and clean it. That's the way it is.

I believe if someone expected a DM to set up their gear on a coastal dive off of NC they'd get a bunch of funny looks from not only the DM but everyone else on the boat...
If I ever go to one of those resort places, no one's touching my gear. :)

Watch it, Peter. Lynne may make you stay in the gear storage closet so her gear can be in the room with her. ;)

*smile* (and that is not a pleasant smile)

Touch my gear and have a very bad day.

Jeff I remember helping you set up gear for cavern configuration and then watching it get bounced it down a well shaft, does that count? Of course You put it all together and fun was had by all

I have had DM ask me if they could set up my gear but usually by the time they do it's already to go. It's a customer service thing and some people take advantage of it (at their own risk)

Peter I totally agree, Let Lynn keep her gear in the bathroom after she rinses it off. Precious camera.

Azza:
I teach my students to hold the LPI button down when cracking the tank valve, you wanna test the BCD in your predive check anyway...

That is what I have always done too.

The reason is; that if you take a reg that has one atmotphere pressure in it and whack open the valve that has 200-300 atm in it, then it can slam the HP seat against the crown which can exert a force and imact, that the HP seat is not designed to withstand. This can cause unnessicary wear or even cause cracking.

I do it with the inflator for the same reason as AZ.

Regarding a SPG going, I was taught to hold the SPG against the side of the tank while you turn on the value.
