Hi, Fabulous Dame!
Again, I admire you for diving in such a cold place & am sure you are a wonderful diver after all of that training & experience.
You said 2 things that seem different to me: 1) You want to be a better diver, & 2) you want to instruct.
When my husband took his Instructor Training Course, the first day, they told his class, "This is not to make you a better diver. It is to prepare you to make divers out of non-divers." That is because when you teach, you must be focused on students, not your own skills.
If you feel ready to move into leadership, an AI (Assistant Instructor) or Divemaster class may be appropriate now. In my AI program, I have a 1-to-1 arrangement with an instructor who teaches OW, AOW, Rescue, & Master diver courses. We meet to plan how we will work with the students, and he sometimes assigns me topics to teach under his supervision. I prepare a short lecture, & he interupts me if I make mistakes (it is very important for OW students to hear only accurate information in class.) I help in the pool & ocean. He gives me very small tasks (like escorting students back to shore) and supervises everything. The idea is for me to be as ready as possible for an instructors' course, or just ot work as an AI. This is a NAUI program, too, but maybe other agencies have AI, too. DM is different because you get to work with students with more autonomy and you get to lead groups on dives if they are certified already. With DM, you must have insurance.
I am sorry to hear that your club is dying. How wonderful that you are still moving forward in your own education. If Florida sounds too warm for you, perhaps you can join us here in California & get a Los Angeles County Instructor class!
