I was told by a local PADI instructor that I had to get a certain certification in order to dive twins filled with the same mix of nitrox. Why? If it's the same blend, and I'm breathing from both tanks at the same time just for extended bottom time, as long as I don't break the PPO limits of my mix, what could happen? He said it could kill me (somehow )????

The reason I ask, is I want to dive Venice Beach Fl for some shark teeth, and I want to rig the tanks with 36 or 40% nitrox so I can stay down longer collecting dem toofs.

That's what I thought. It didn't make any sense to me.

Maybe he was trying to say you should be wary of spending hours at a high PPO2? The idea that there's some special card for nitrox doubles vs. nitrox singles is a special kind of stupid for sure.

Based on just nitrox volume, yah seems silly. Could he just be referring to being properly trained on diving doubles vs singles? Gas choice aside, there is merit to having formal instuction on diving manifolded doubles, or any style of doubles, before doing it as the valve differences present another bit of complexity that can create problems you wouldn't have on singles. Just a thought...

Assuming you have a Nitrox certification, you need nothing more to dive it in double tanks. It is a good idea, however, to learn how manifolded doubles work (if that is what you are using) and how to solve failures, because you've added a bunch more failure points to your setup, and a variety of user errors can result in some awkward situations.

I would agree with some training or getting a mentor to help with the doubles. But a "special" card for nitrox does not make sense.

Beyond what others have said, I can only think that the instructor may have assumed you were interested in doing deco dives - as you stated you wanted to stay longer underwater - and he wanted to emphasize the need for proper training for these dives.
