Is the beginning of may still ok to dive the Similan Islands? We're going to do a liveaboard and then stay somewhere nice and do some day diving. Any suggestions - from resorts, to diveschools, to liveaboards would be great!

May is weatherwise very unpredictable. It can be a tricky month with wind changing from the NE to the SW (and back to the NE again) and can have rain showers as well.
The better months for the Similans are defenitely Feb-March and April.

Bowmouth is right. It can be really good or really bad. Kind of a crapshoot really. Good luck!

May tends to be calm on the Gulf side (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, etc.). We don't have nearly as many 1st-class dive sites as they do on the west coast, but we've got enough to provide you with several days of good diving if the weather on the west coast is bad. If you come to the Gulf, don't miss Sail Rock and don't miss Chumhon Pinnacle -- we had whale sharks at both sites last May, and they're both very nice dives even without the sharks. Decent dive sites very near Koh Tao include White Rock and a handful of others. However, some of the most frequently-dived sites near Koh Tao (or in the marine park near Samui) are suitable for beginners but can be a bit less than thrilling for more experienced divers. Pattaya has some nice wrecks and is only about 2 hours from Bangkok, which might also add to your options if the weather on the west coast is bad when you visit Thailand.
