Diving in Fluids other than Water

Has this been done before? I would think only commercial divers would do something like diving in giant tanks of corn oil or something.

Sounds wild and I wonder what strange things would happen once you get into other fluids.

There have been shows on the discovery channel that included divers who had to clean out clogged sewers. how's that for diving in fluids other than water?

You could dive in liquid mercury. But given it's density the biggest problem might be finding a way to sink ;) (given that lead will float in mercury)

scary thing is mercury kinda melts gold, there was a story about how a local chem teacher let students play with the stuff and a girl's gold ring melted off her hand.

But other liquids...I have known people who had to dive in gas tanks at the storage tanks in town to clean the screens.
 
They have people that go into the beer tanks and clean them...but I think they do it holding their breath

I think you could use the same tables. You would just have to find the "equivalent depth". For example, mercury is 13 times denser than water. So going 10 feet into mercury is like going 130 feet into water. So your NDL would be at 5 min (at least according to my NASE tables.)

Now other weird things would happen, I think. Say you were in corn oil. It's less dense than water, so you could go a lot deeper into it. Because it's also less dense, you would need less weight. But it's more viscous so your terminal velocity in the water would be a lot less with that smaller amount of weight. I wonder if the effects would rougly cancel out. :huh:
