I love Colombia! I have been recently been certified and we have gone to Cartegena in the past as well as the Isla Rosarios. Has anybody been diving here? If so where do you recommend?

Hi Luft,

We live in Cartagena and dive regularly here. We go with La Tortuga dive school as they spend more time diving off Baru which we have found to be better than Islas del Rosario (coral in better condition, more fish). All the other dive schools (there are about 5 or 6) dive only in the Islas del Rosario as they leave their equipment there and you get kitted out after the hour boat ride from Cartagena to the islas whereas La Tortuga take the tanks on the boat from Cartgagena so have more freedom on which sites to choose.

We have never seen anything big here (no turtles, sharks, dolphins) but there is a good variety of tropical fish and coral. Visibility is OK and the water extremely warm. Best time to go is probably around now as we won't have any rain until April although the water can get a little choppy in the afternoons when the wind picks up.

If you are coming all the way to Colombia to dive we would definitely recommend San Andres and Providencia more than Cartagena. Cheap, fastastic visibility, not many people there and nice variety and number of sites.

If you need any specific advice let us know.

Agreed. I had a great vacation in San Andrés back in June of 2005. Great vis, excellent coral condition, but brisk winds kept us on the leeward side of the island for all but one day.

San Andrés is about 500 miles northwest of the Colombian mainland. It's actually much closer to Nicaragua than the rest of Colombia.

I was told there are frequent charter flights from the Toronto area during the winter months. I caught a charter flight direct from Grand Cayman. Otherwise, air connections are best done through Panama.

My diving was through San Andrés Divers and I would highly recommend them.
