Hi Guys
I am doing a few dive trips abroad @ Christmas and next year...what dive gear does everyone take with them when they travel and what don't you take to cut down on weight ect...
Thanks

For recreational diving travel in the tropics, I pack:

1 set Force Fins
DIY minimalist sidemount rig
2 sets SP Mk25/S600 regs
2 lightweight cam-bands w/boltsnaps for cylinder attachment
Vyper in bungee mount w/ Eezycut
Uwatec bottom timer in bungee mount
Sunnto SK7 compass in bungee mount
Mask
Lightweight booties
Board shorts
4th Element 'Thermocline' top (lightweight, neutrally buoyant, machine washable)
2x Finger spools
3' DSMB
Wetnotes

It all fits into a 35L day sack and can go 'carry-on' for flights (along with a few t-shirts and toiletries), along with a tiny netbook (with Multi-Deco software).

You are bound to get a variety of answers but most SB's take the basics:

Mask
Reg
Computer
BC
Fins
Wetsuit

I also take SMB/reel, dive light, whistle and small save a dive kit. What I don't take is extra reg, pony, extra mask. I do take an extra dive computer since they are small and relatively light.

Having just come back from Fiji and paid $250 round trip in extra bag fee (lots of photo gear) my wife and decided we might be willing to leave home and rent the two bulkiest items - BC's and fins.

Just back from one week trip on a liveaboard. Packed the following dive gear, which is my standard travel kit...

B/P with 6lb STA
Wing
Cam-bands
Mask (plus backup)
Jet Fins
Snorkel
Booties
Neoprene socks
DUI 30/30 dry suit
Hood
Reg set
Vytec DS computer and transmitter
Backup bottom time
Backup SPG
150ft spool
6' Halcyon SMB
3C-cell light
2C-cell light
Tank-marker light (some ops require 'em for night dives)
Two strobes (some ops don't have good ones on night)
Extra batteries
GoPro camera
Tray with two Sola lights
Handful of double-enders, zipties, o-rings, and other save-a-dive stuff

Regs, computer, and camera went in carry-on.

Usually also bring a can light, but the two Sola 1200 lights covered off on that.

For a trip to the tropics:

alum backplate & harness, 25lb wing
single tank regs (yoke)
fins & mask
computer + backup
compass, SMB/spool, torch
camera gear & laptop
powerboard & chargers (one travel adaptor for powerboard)
sharkskin top/rash guard
and a few clothes (shorts & t shirts etc)

around 25kg.. think that's about it :)

We take all our gear (BC/fins/booties/reg/mask/backup computer/assorted lights/mesh bags/lots of assorted little stuff.) If I have room and depending where we're going, I may take an extra reg or other spare stuff. We only wear 1mm skins, so that helps, although we often each take 2 along as it's nice to have a fairly dry one to put on. My husband takes a bunch of camera gear (housed DSLR, 2 ports, 2 strobes, lenses, arms, focus light, and all the little stuff that goes with it.)

I look at everything that goes in the bags (dive gear and not) and ask if we will actually use it this trip. I'm always trying to pare down because it all adds up, and I pay attention to weight when purchasing gear where it's more significant. I wouldn't buy a new reg just to save a couple pounds, but when we decided to buy new regs we went with lighter ones. Fortunately the fins we like are pretty light, but if they were heavy I'd be looking at that. My save-a-dive type stuff is in a couple soft zipper cases instead of a dry box, and I toss these in a drybag when it makes sense. A while back I bought a lightweight new drybag specifically for travel, since I was always forgetting to dig one out of the kayak when it came time to pack (despite the list), and the old bags were heavy anyway.

To minimize battery weight, I have mostly changed over first to LED lights and then to rechargeable batteries. My husband is taking a charger for strobe batteries anyway. For lights that take Cs I use AA adapters. So I'm taking smaller and fewer batteries than in the past.

Books used to contribute to our load; tablets and Kindles take care of that.

I try not to take too many clothes; I still take too many, but I'm getting much better. Besides a list of stuff to take, I have a list of stuff not to take - things I always found myself packing and didn't use.

We each check one rolling duffle, and have a typical rollaboard stye carry on, and a small backpack as a personal item. We don't have trouble keeping the checked bags under 50, and mine was closer to 40# last time. The rollaboards take some of the heavy stuff as long as it's not an airline where they care. (Where you are you'll likely need a different strategy.) My husband's backpack is one of those clown cars of a camera backpack that holds an amazing amount of his camera gear. He does have a generic hard rolling bag with foam he has checked if we'll be on an airline where he knows he probably won't get away with such a heavy personal item no matter the size.

How much to take? As much of your own gear that you can feasibly carry! Using gear that's not your own/that you are unfamiliar with can significantly detract from your diving experiences, especially if the shop's rental gear isn't good quality.

Happy Holidays :)

BCD, Fins, Lavacore vest, Mask, Wetsuit, SMB, Computer, Booties, SeaGold Snot drops, Torches, Go Pro.......before you consider packing things think about where you are going to be diving and who with.
All my gear plus one months worth of clothing and assorted odds and ends (Ipad topside camera etc) comes in at 17kg - which from Aus usually gives you more than enough luggage allowance.

I just take 1 extra bag/2 divers and take all my own gear. Rent only weights & tanks. This leave me with the option of adding even 2-4kg more if we need it & I have gear I'm used to and know I can trust.
On the odd chance that you dive a drysuit abroad - take zipper wax too. That salt water is nasty stuff on metal.
