To echo a few others: 1) I often get dives in on work trips, and bring my whole kit. 2) I love my lightweight Eagle Creek wheeled duffel; the model I have is no longer made but the No Matter What bag looks similar with a bag weight of 4 pounds/2 kg. 3) As with others I carry a portable electronic luggage scale so I can check the bag's weight before I get to the airport. 4) Because of lots of work travel I have elite status on two airlines so I can check two bags internationally for no charge.

I try to keep my gear to a minimum, but as a photographer it is a losing battle at times especially if I have to make a second flight. I can manage a Lowe Pro backpack with cameras, lenses and laptop plus a Pelican wheeled case with housing, strobes padded with T-shirts as cabin baggage weighing in generally at 20+Kg. All my dive gear goes in a normal suitcase plus a spare strobe and other bits and pieces usually weighing in just under 30Kg.

Heavy clothing is worn on the flights to and from the dive destination and laundered during the stay for the return journey. I generally wear nothing more than shorts and T-shirts during my dive trips.

I take my full kit including pony, multi-tool, 2nd stage adjustment tools - I use only their tanks and weights - familarity breeds safety. I also bring my Acer to Skype & dump vid & pics to. One paperback - when I finish it I buy another. Meds & toiletries. 3 t-shirts, 3 pairs of underware, and 2 pairs of zip-off pants (convert to shorts in a jiffy) - I wear one of each and the rest goes in checked. My dive suit is a Speedo covered by nylon soccer shorts and a rash guard T-shirt. I come out well under the weight limits. One checked bag at about 45#, one carry-on at about 19# and a backpack. I buy a wild tropical shirt at my destination as a souvenir to wear for dress up - should I need to.

I carry hockey bags. They won't break or rip, are easy to ID as my bags (bright red) and roll up to the size of a sweatshirt once empty.

Hockey bags are great. That's our next market after Scuba. Current Hockey bags don't breath enough for wet gear. Gear gets very stinky and actually grows some nasty fungus and viruses like Staph and Athletes foot when your kids don't remove their gear.

I haven't heard the same thing with scuba gear but it sure can stink if you don't rinse it.
