Is it worth the money?
I just had a disappointing conversation with DAN.
I tore my Rotator Cuff a few months back while I was putting my gear on getting ready for a dive. I went to the Doc and they just fixed it. My regular health insurance is paying for the repair so I didn't think about filing a claim with DAN.
I started adding up all the co-pays I have to make now and all together it comes to around $1000. Then I remembered I have a preferred policy with DAN. I should be covered either way for the co-pays. FAT CHANCE.
Because I wasn't in the water yet it don't qualify for DIVING ACCIDENT CLAIM, and because it happened in the country Live in it DON'T qualify for a NON DIVING ACCIDENT CLAIM under the preferred plain.
So basically the policy is a waste of money.

Guess I won't be renewing the policy this time around.
Just thought you guys might want to know before you waste your money.

So, when tossing around scuba gear, you injured your shoulder.. and you're upset that a diving accident insurance policy doesn't cover it?? Not only that.. but you're saying the insurance is WORTHLESS.

Hmmm..interesting, but just IMO, i don't know if I would expect them to pay if I bust my rotator cuff putting on gear. It wasn't really a diving accident, but If you had some other kind of Health insurance with them I'd expect 'em to pay.

Just my 0.02

A dive begins upon entry into the water
and ends upon exit from the water. A Covered Dive must begin while Coverage is in force.

Looks like someone didn't bother to read their policy. Must be DAN's fault...

Why would you think DAN would cover it in the first place?

It's not surprising that they won't cover it, you waited until after you had it fixed to even notify them of the injury. Plus the next time you hurt yourself handling gear make sure you were "In the water" and handing the gear up into the boat when it happens. ;)

Guess you'll be SOL when you get bent and land a $15,000 medical bill for which you have no insurance.

Me... well, I'll let my regular medical insurance cover injuries I sustain when hauling heavy things on land, and let my diving insurance cover me for injuries I sustain while actually diving.

I have a PREFFERED POLICY for non diving accidents with DAN for this you must be out side the country you live in and at least 50 miles for your home for them to cover any losses.
For the diving accient YOU MUST BE IN THE WATER to be covered. not on the boat or standing on land.
Read the fine print you'll be surprised.
I my opinion that makes the policy worthless.

I already read the fine print and knew all of this.

I fail to see how the plan is worthless. The biggest reason to have it is to cover events that land you in a super-expensive hyperbaric chamber.

What will you do now when you get bent?

If you think it's worthless, you're directly stating that the *only* reason you paid for the coverage was for "non diving acccidents."

What about DCS?

Then don't renew. But I see no reason to bash DAN because you failed to understand the coverage.
