If you guys find a bolt at an average hardware store (not a shoulder screw which I seriously doubt they’ll have anyways) that works WITHOUT modification , the bill is on me.

At least on my diverite reel, they took a standard screw that wasn’t threaded all the way and lopped off the extra threads to make a poor man’s shoulder screw. I literally just took my reel apart and measured everything , I’m literally sitting in my machine shop and I’m happy to demonstrate WHY any standard screw ain’t gonna work without mods.

Edit:

Diverite screw on top. Short 1/4-20s are almost certainly going to be threaded their entire length, that will just clamp the knob. Hardware store screws with the poor man’s shoulder are going to be way too long without cutting the threaded portion.

I'd suggest contacting dive rite directly. They have (generally) excellent customer service and the answers you need.

Does it actually need to have just the right shoulder step, or will a slightly long bolt bottoming out against the bottom of the hole do the same thing?

It’s a through hole

I understand, having a sacrificial nylon screw, instead of snapping a spool
but I still go over all my stuff and replace unhappy suss bits with stainless

Your post is fine right here in the DIY forum as you are wanting to make a DIY repair of your reel.

But, there is a gear forum for accessories such as reels:

and there is a forum specifically for Dive Rite:

My suggestion is to give Dive Rite a call, they have excellent customer service and can best advise on the size screw/bolt you need.

The other option would be take your reel to a hardware store like a True Value or Ace Hardware...one with a selection of Hillman hardware drawers. Then find a bolt that will fit. My assumption if the diameter of the plastic bolt you have is 1/4-inch is that the threading is 1/4-20...that is a pretty standard size and readily available. My bet is the bolt is plastic so it will break before the hole in body of the reel does....if you don't have a hardware store with a good Hillman selection, then go to home depot and find the correct fit in a metal bolt and let me know....we have a store nearby my house that has an excellent Hillman selection and with the correct threading and bolt length, I am pretty sure I can find you a nylon bolt to mail out to you rather inexpensively.

Update,
I called DiveRite. So these old reels have custome screws. All the old stock is now at Divegearexpress.com
Custom screw so can't find at home depot

Based on @lostsheep's picture above of the screws, it looks like the threading 1/4-20...the total length and the length of the unthreaded shoulder might have been custom but I would be totally surprised if they developed a custom thread entirely.

If you use metal, you can get 1/4-20 stainless steel and file/sand the threads off under the head to whatever custom length you need, and then just cut it to length with a dremel tool cutoff disc. It is even easier with nylon 1/4-20 screw/bolt.

If you send your reel to me (Western NY), I will custom fabricate a replacement for you and then send it back to you. This is not rocket surgery.

Taking the threads off just under the head wont prevent the screw from going in, it needs a shoulder or a sleeve; I'm not sure a sleeve would be great due to the really thin wall ~1/32".

I agree with @Zef , it's not rocket science but I have the tools here to make it truly trivial.

Since I kinda came into this thread like a troll, allow me to atone. @SelfDiver , if dgx can't take care of you, DM me and I'll either send you the one I have here and make a replacement for myself, or I'll modify one of the bazillion machine screws I have here and send it to you. My fee is only that you pay it forward when you can.
