If you guys find a bolt at an average hardware store (not a shoulder screw which I seriously doubt they’ll have anyways) that works WITHOUT modification , the bill is on me.

At least on my diverite reel, they took a standard screw that wasn’t threaded all the way and lopped off the extra threads to make a poor man’s shoulder screw. I literally just took my reel apart and measured everything , I’m literally sitting in my machine shop and I’m happy to demonstrate WHY any standard screw ain’t gonna work without mods.

Edit:

Diverite screw on top. Short 1/4-20s are almost certainly going to be threaded their entire length, that will just clamp the knob. Hardware store screws with the poor man’s shoulder are going to be way too long without cutting the threaded portion.

I'd suggest contacting dive rite directly. They have (generally) excellent customer service and the answers you need.

Does it actually need to have just the right shoulder step, or will a slightly long bolt bottoming out against the bottom of the hole do the same thing?

It’s a through hole
