Can anyone give me some insight as to what makes a "dive physician"?

I'm aware of courses put on my DAN and others, but I'm wondering if there is a certifying body -- or what training is necessary to be considered qualified in dive medicine...

Thanks,

DocHueb

I suppose that it depends on where you are. Around here, a dive physician is (non-exhaustive list) an ENT doctor, a hyperbaric doctor, a sports-injury-doctor specialized in preasure-related injuries or just a doctor who's spent time intern'ing/following courses/sleeping with the right people in scuba-injuries

I think that dr. Bill could be described as a scuba-doctor too, although he's not an MD

Howdy DocHueb:

Welcome to the board! Interesting question. I'm sure you know that any physician can hang out a shingle and call themselves a "dive physician" if they want to, and many of them might very well be "qualified", but your question was specifically about certification.

Some of the courses you mention will offer certification as a "Diving Medical Officer". I see that you're in Nebraska. The American Board of Medical Specialties offers board certification in Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine- currently through the The American Board of Emergency Medicine and the American Board of Preventive Medicine. For some further information take a look at the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society's website at:

Hey Doc,

You might also try the Undersea & Hyperbaric Medical Society. Lots of good info and contacts there. Have you done the NOAA course yet?

Hello all!
I'm starting my grad studies as a Nurse Practitioner. Does anyone know if any of these 'certifications' are available to Nurse Practitioners?

One organization who has a great program is Hyperbarics International in Key Largo owned by Dick Rutkowski.
