don't leave any valuables in your rental. Bring only your dive gear and towels. Take your id cards and cash with you diving.

Where do you guys/gals put your car keys? We can't figure out where to store the car key so that the chip inside doesn't get shorted out.

On the rent-a-car that I had the chip thingie was extra. If you get one like that you could take it off and leave it in your hotel.

I leave the smart key in the car trunk and wear on a lanyard around my neck a dumb key that only operates the doors.

I dive with my chiped key all the time and it hasent failed yet. Don't try that with the remote but keys, mine anyway seem to be sealed. If not, it's a rental! Call them to bring you a new one.

Some cars don't have "dumb" keys and Im betting most rentals don't come with them. My Jeep will kill it's self after 3 seconds if the wrong or a dead key is used. Guess you just have to see what you get.

For the car I own on Maui, the dealer charged about $5 to make a dumb key. I've taken rental car smart/chipped keys diving several times. Just to make the inconvenience of killing the key less likely, I put it in the "poor man's drybox" --- a ziplock bag inside another ziplock bag.

requisite on topic comment: Alternate exit points are nice to have. A typical incident here in Maui
Maui News of FEB 3:
Diver rescued after being reported missing

A man who was reported missing after he went diving at night by himself Wednesday was rescued Thursday morning when he was spotted on a cliff in the Nakalele area, fire officials said.

The Maui Fire Department’s Air One rescue helicopter lowered a rescue firefighter to bring the man to safety after he was located at 7:09 a.m., said Battalion Chief Alan Pascua. He said the helicopter and rescue crew were dispatched at first light to search for the man.

Napili firefighters also were looking for the man, who had been dropped off in the Nakalele area by a friend at 10 p.m., said acting Battalion Chief Jeff Murray. He said the friend couldn’t find the diver when he went to pick him up at midnight and called police shortly after 3 a.m. Thursday.

The diver wasn't identified, but the "drop off at 10PM for solo dive, pickup at midnight" sure sounds like someone out lobstering or spearfishing who couldn't make it back to a good exit point.

classic Hawaii mishap! I have a couple good friends that got to ride in the basket on the rescue heli...well one did and the other one climbed ashore (night dive). So, the one that climbed ashore is always trying to stir it up by telling people "hey, ask him about his ride in the basket!" I get the feeling the instructor that went for the aerial ride wishes people would forget.

So what do we have to spend it on in the water...:D

Just make sure if you guys are hiding stuff, that no one is watching you. they will hide and spy on you while you are hiding the keys and such. Well, we need cash for beers and food after the dive at....Melissa, what that roadside biker bar we always hit? west side... I love slummin and I love the food there! Local portions.
