Mansfield Dam
No Real Thermocline. 67 F from 10 - 40 FT.
Visibility 10 FT.
Diving EAN 25 'Slightrox.' Finned our way towards the dam, passing some boy scouts and some tech divers. Murky haze 5 FT off the bottom. Lots of 'threads' of particulate matter.

Three dives today at Wreck Alley as part of Advanced Open Water course with two students. We did the deep, wreck and boat modules of the course. We used the pecan tree trail to get deep, enjoying the scenery during the dive.

Visibility: Hazy to 30', 10' or so until it cleared up significantly past 60' to 15'+ vis.
Temps: Thermocline starting at 25', second obvious temp. drop at 40', another around 70'
Range from 81* at surface to 55* at 95'.

Spring Lake San Marcos June 17

Temp, same
Spring Flow, 202cfs
Vis, hard to say

Finally back in the water again! John and Pete went out first to float coontail starting at Cream of Wheat. Peppermintpaddi and me followed about 20 minutes later. After those two have been working, hard to say what the vis was at the start of a working dive.

There is a lot of coontail along all sides of the dive sites from Cream of Wheat all the way down to Catfish Hotel. One thing that is complicating the floating is that there is also a lot of parrot feather mixed in and that hangs up the float. In essence, you have to float the coontail and then go back and get all the parrot feather. Really slows down the work.

Another very bright spot, we saw a soft shell turtle right at the hump between Ossified Forrest and Riverbed. Very rare to see one in the lake.

What a fantastic day.... 81 degree surface water temp at the safety stop both dives.

Partly cloudy a little wind not bad, lots of people and boats out enjoying the Lake.

We did pictures inside the big crater grotto at Starnes then ended up finishing the dive at the Pecan tree.

Max depth starnes was around 70 feet with 20 foot visibility horizontal

Max depth at wreck alley 90 feet with 20 feet visibility vertical at the Pecan Tree

Thanks Robert, Mary, Wes and Ellen

Oh yah, Ellen great job as boat captian. We had Scuba BOB with us today and Aquaman

:rofl3:

What a fantastic day.... 81 degree surface water temp at the safety stop both dives.

Temps at depth were 70F (Starnes, 60ffw) and 63F (Wreck Alley, 85ffw). I can't speak to the visibility on the 2nd dive because my mask iced over.

The Giant Stride was (as always) a great place to dive from. :)

Stillhouse Hollow - June 19, 2010

Dive #1: 8:58 AM
77f at max depth of 40 ft. Visability 5 ft at best. Attempted to determine width of the river channel. Tied off line to one side, shot a heading, and proceeded to go across. Vis deteriorated quickly to inches. I believe I overshot the far bank and swam over it. Unsuccessful.

Dive #2: 10:47 AM
77f at max depth of 42 ft. Went back to the channel. Dropped down and traveled along the wall. Pretty cool. A few very small grottos. Vis improved to 8 ft. Witnessed my dive buddy get attacked by a very large and very territorial fresh water drum on one of the wrecks. No doubt, the highlight of the dive.
