I'm just curious, is this part of OW training now at these locales to not need any personal data where you guys claim this is commonplace? Are they teaching "Just follow the guide"?
Bold of you to assume they are OW certified. An hour briefing gets you in the water following a DM in most places around the world. Known as a "resort course" or "discover scuba"

l don't want this to turn into a tables vs computer debate. I guess the only reason I mentioned getting trained on tables was because they tended to hammer the information into your brain by making you do problems forwards and backwards. We took this stuff very seriously and we were told this is serious stuff. My class was taught by an ex Navy diver and someone who worked in diving not only as an instructor but as an underwater stunt man for movies plus anything to do with underwater work for TV commercials.
I'm relating these teachings into a deep understanding of the physics of depth and time. So for me, I would never place myself into a position where I would trust someone entirely and go with no instrumentation at all except for maybe an SPG. I would never do a dive without my own computer set to my preferences and on my body tracking my dive. Shallow or not, trusting somebody else completely is nuts!

Yup.

Ok, but are you telling me they have no clue how deep they are or for how long? I understand that all these dives are fairly benign, but are they clued in on anything? Do they at least have an SPG and know what number on it means they are getting low on air?
What do they talk about in the one hour before they go on a guided dive?
Beyond all of the above, I've already read stuff here on sb about supposedly experienced OW certified divers following guides and they still have no computer or have any clue about air consumption or even an inkling about depth and time physiology.
Is this normal now?

Cozumel is the worse I see. Since almost all dives have a guide you more or less stay with. On many occasions I have met divers whose computers were in air mode while they were on 32% (?) and were then locked out and had no clue why this would be so. One fellow was going to send his new computer back to Scubapro becasue it locked. Another told me "James, we are not into details of it" and they too were locked out and let's see, a couple I met last time out had no computers or anything but an spg.

The good news is that single tanks and especially on Nitrox most divers who are "not into the details of it" will blow through their air long before DCS becomes a problem on most dives though Cozumel has the depth to do it if you have the gas time ;) to get bent.

Eric, we are not the Scuba Police. I try to explain things to people in a helpful way and if they are "not into the details of it" then I proceed with my business which is enough to keep me busy without being busy about other peoples not being "into the details of it" you see.

Eric, are you joining the Force or something? Hades with all that, just details, it is all good even if they are fizzing like a dropped Coke. As long as they do not explode and get goo all over me I am good too.

You could have just revived any similar thread from ten, twenty, thirty or forty years ago: same question, same answers. I suppose even people who learnt to dive with the very same Cousteau were soon asking, "What's wrong with the new generation of divers who juat want to follow the guide?".

Don't be surprised if any generation of peoples ask the very same question about the younger generations, and this probably goes far back in time to the very Neanderthals sitting on a cave and ranting about the younger generation that they don't care, they don't go Mammoth hunting like in "the old days", they don't tend the fire in the entrance to the cave, and don't sharpen their flint stones or whatever was a thing back in the day.

I suppose we are just getting older?

I know many people swear by these activities but I've always been suspect. But that's another thread.

There are divers and there are people who go diving
Don't worry about the 'People who go diving' ,do your own thing with like minded people, divers ( or solo). They are keeping this industry ticking along, dive shops stay open, charter boats have the numbers, DMs and guides make a living etc. Since I sold the charter boat, compressor and banks I need access to gas and boats ,selfish I know, it is what it is.

OK, so everything is cool?
No worries or concerns?
Nobody needs to know anything about depth or time or how to use a computer or you don't even need a computer or a depth gauge or a timing device (silly me, if they don't even have a computer or much less know how to use it, what good would a depth gauge and timing device do?!)
Somebody will do everything for you.
Got it.
Thanks.
