I think it is not possible to argue with DIR on the grounds of safety. As every aspect of their training is centered around safety. One thing that is noticeably different is a standardized gear setup for a number of reasons with safety as the primary factor. So, having said that. When a group proports to be the very best, which there is nothing wrong with, they attract a certain kind of person. The kind of person that wants to be the very best. Within that group many times are elitists that yearn for the opportunity to look down on others.

So, having said that, there is a clear minority within any group that acts outside the groups values. However, as a group, I believe the DIR mindset attracts more of these people.

Written by a non-DIR diver that dives with people who aren't diving DIR when they dive with me...

what was written in the article was no inaccurate. Calling non-DIR divers strokes was more prominent once than it is now. The point is to show why that shouldnt represent DIR not just to erase it off of wikipedia.

Hi KWS,

I don't know if there's an active DIR community in SE Texas, but my strong suggestion is to seek out some local DIR divers (or chat with the many of the DIR divers who are here on SB), get to know them, and make your judgments that way, rather than rely on a questionable Wikipedia article.

As far as I know, many of those snippets you've posted from Wikipedia are simply wrong or outdated, and it looks as if the article was written by someone who has a serious beef with DIR (and thus violating Wikipedia's NPOV policy).

I stumbled onto this article while looking for info on GUE UTD AND DIR techniques and improvement skills. The attitude that unless you are DIR you are a danger and hazzard to you your bubby and the universe is think is unacceptable. I had a lot of respect for those who excelled in the finer forms of diving. Now after reading this I dont know.

Here is a some of the content

Controversy and "strokes"
The core of the controversy surrounding DIR is the phrase itself. If a group is DIR, then all who are not doing things the DIR way are 'Doing it Wrong', DIW. The use of the term 'stroke' to describe non-DIR divers as idiots has exacerbated tensions.[11]

“ [P]ossibly the most important piece of wisdom in the diving world, and is something we should all apply to all of our diving. It is, simply, 'Don't dive with strokes.'
The term 'stroke' refers to someone who, knowing there is a better system, chooses to dive in a less than optimal way. It applies to those instructors who encourage students (who know no better) to exercise Personal Preference, in order to sell more equipment; it applies to those who don't plan their dives; those who dive beyond their abilities; who dive deep on air; who take unnecessary risks; who do big dives using unfamiliar gear; whose only reason for diving is depth.

Diving with strokes moves us into an area where our safety is no longer in our own hands. Strokes are sometimes highly 'qualified'. Often they seem very confident - usually because they have no concept of the danger they are getting themselves, and you, into.[12]

Some one please tell me that I am seeing this the wrong way.

I am trying to find the link again.

This tells me the water belongs to those who have no more to learn and the rest are trespassers. If you are not a semi truck driver you have no right on the road.

Doing It Right - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

You do realize that wikipedia isn't an authoritative source for anything ... that it's a place where basically anyone can go in and state their opinions as though they were facts ... kinda like ScubaBoard ...

... Bob (Grateful Diver)

Classic George Irvine. You came too late for the techdiver / aquanaut list. That would really upset ya. :D Though I am not a dir person, it seems that mindset has become the exception and not the rule. Most of the GUE trained people I have met have been pretty nice.

There are two of us in this area that I know of and I'm not always the best poster child. My buddy is even worse. :rofl3:
