Sorry, I'm not sure understand your question.

There are two kinds of U/W compass. Direct reading and Indirect reading.

Direct reading compass - The magnetic needle always indicates the direction to which the lubber line points. Suunto SK6 is an example.

Indirect reading compass - the rotating bezel contains the degree markings and when the index mark is aligned with the magnetic needle, the lubber line indicates the direction of travel.

I'm just wondering what experienced UW navigators prefer and why.
 
Click the "Advanced Search" link under the search box. Check "Posts" and enter Compass Indirect into the Keywords box. Do that search. You will find what you are looking for along with all the confusion caused by the two types of compasses.
