You're right about the swivel issue. I see mostly fixed port first stages on doubles around here, with the odd set of Atomics, and sometimes Dive Rite's with swivels.

In the Great Lakes I would expect more diaphram 1st overall. A piston would not be a good below thermocline or year-round reg choice given your water temps. I have Mk20/25s and have not had any freeflow issues, but our water is min 46F. Plenty warm enough to prevent icing.
 
I agree and I only dive diaphrams. The Zeagle with swivels are diaprams as well as the Dive Rites. There are some guys up here, several that I know personally, that swear by the Atomics for all their deep cold tech diving in the lakes. I personally prefer diaphram, but they seem to have good results. I've had my Zeagles into the 30's lots of times, and the mid 40's dozens of times, and never had even a hint of a freeflow or problem with them.
