I have just completed my gear collection (I lack only a tank). With a Suunto Vyper and Apex ATX50 with TX40 Octo. I asked the LDS to put the primary on a seven foot hose in order to emulate DIR on my recreational rig. I would just like to verify my understanding of the situation:

1. Long hose goes under right shoulder, across chest, behind head from the left, and into my mouth.
2. Short hose goes over right shoulder(but under long hose) and onto a necklace.
3. Inflator like normal.
4. SPG clipped to BC D-ring

How's that? Now I know what type of clips DIR prefers(for SPG), but I am not really sure how to rig up the octo necklace. Could anyone offer any assistance?
thanks,
brandon

The way you state the long hose is routed is correct for a 5 foot hose, but for a seven the hose goes straight down from the reg between the cylinder and wing, forward under the canister light at your right hip, diagnoally across your chest, behind your neck and into your mouth.

For the necklace, a bungee knotted at each end and put under the wire tie as you attach the mouthpiece is one way to do it.

If you don't carry a cannistser light, you can also route the hose under the knife holster on you left. Many DIR OW will just use a 5 or 6 foot hose and run that under the arm, but overall to me I like the idea of having the same gear all along. I think in the DIR Fund book JJ even questions if the long hose is needed in OW.

You can also get on the techdiver newsgroup and ask ol George himself but make sure to have the fire retardant suit on!

Just as a side note, you can tuck the excess of the 7' hose inside your waist strap or hook it on your knife.

I also like the necklace used as described by Roakey. Pictures of the necklace and the hose routing can be seen on the WKPP website.

Good luck.

Mike

PS. You only need a fire retardant suit if you intend on arguing with GI or plan on telling him he's wrong. :) I highly recommend subscribing to the GUE DIR Quest list.

Try this for setting up your necklaced back-up

and this for installing the bolt snap on your primary:

A few other things to consider:
(1) Port orientation/hose routing -- Take a look at how your ports are oriented. My Apeks TX-100 was originally configured so that the primary reg originated our of the port closest to me, while the octo came from the rear port on my right side. When using a long hose set-up, I have the primnary coming out of the rear port since the hose is routed down the side of my body (I just have it looped under the edge of my BC on my right hip before it passes across the front of my chest -- it stays in place nicely). The back-up reg hose comes from the port closer to my body.

(2) Length of back-up hose -- depends on the "user" -- double or single tanks, size of the diver, how high you have your tank mounted, port orientation. I found a 22" hose too short for my single tank set-up (I use 26").

Hope this is helpful.

Hey LD,

That image demonstration is perfect - that is excactly what you want to do.

Cheers,

You guys are so great. This is just the information that I have been looking for.
Thanks so much,

Hey Voidware, just noticed you are in Greensboro, where do you dive and for how long? I am over in Wake Forest near Raleigh.

If you are interested in DIR on the Rec or Pre Tech level there looks like an awesome course taught by GUE at EE every month or so. I am planning to take it but want to get some more dives in before hand since I have not been able to go for a bit here in winter.
