Let see. I bet his instructor is one of those esteemed Padi Tech instructors. My guess is he drove- not dove - 200 miles and poked his head into a cavern.

Hey junior - believe everything your instructor says right up until the dive plan, then get out of your gear and don't get a speeding ticket while you drive as fast as you can from the scene of a disaster waiting to happen.

California Diver:
i wont drop any names here but i recently had a discussion with my tech instructor who is fully qualified and dives with the likes of dan crowell and john chatterton about tech diving and why dir is nothing but a bunch of crap. how does everyon else feel about this?

Hrmmm -- if you were proud of your instructor you would be dropping his name. I know I would. If I had some total hot shot dude for an instructor I would be throwing his name all over the place -- not the name of dudes he has been diving with. So come on now spill it. The tech diving community in San Diego is really pretty small so it would not be that hard to figure it out.

What classes are you taking?

Kimber

He mentioned his instructor's name in another post.

Please regale us with stories of your 200 mile cave dives, or at least be aware that someone is dragging you through Internet hell with claims like this...

I never heard of him but...I was teaching a class once and while we were talking on the surface I saw an instructor in the water with his students telling them how he was a big tech diver and had dived the mount everest of wrecks as they all (including the instructor) stood there with their alternates and paddles...oops I mean consols...dangling. Could that have been him?

It's possible that the student hypes the instructor. Maybe we shouldn't hang the instructor without ever hearing his side of the story. Anyone who claims a 200 mile cave dive has probably never seen or met a cave diver, so let's see what happens.

Damn, is this the longest running thread in Scubaboard history. I remember Yooper talking out his *** 3 years ago in this thread. After his first GUE course, he kinda vanished.
Mike, have you seen anything from Yooper recently?

Cheers,
Jamie

JeffG:
You should see his (Chatterton) technique when his rebreathers computer malfunctions and he bolts for the upline. It was a thing of beauty....and Dan Crowell...yikes...you should of seen some of the small holes he was fitting into :11:

I watch DSD for those moments when Chatterton's voice over is going on about silt and not stirring it up, and the shot is of him entering a ship or cave or whatever flutter kicking with big poofy silt clouds getting thrown up from every kick.

There should really be a DSD diving drinking game:

- drink when you seen an inspiration
- drink when you see bad trim
- drink when you see flutter kicks
- drink when a dive computer craps out
- drink when chatterton violates rule #3 (e.g. with some homemade rebreather)

If they showed more actual diving on the show you could get really hammered...

Or better yet, take a drink every time an OW diver posts about something that they have only seen and never done. You would never be sober!!

If an OW diver is capable of kicks that don't send up silt clouds, staying in good trim, and not relying on a computer, certainly macho tech divers are as well.

You're right we shouldn't hang the instructor but a 200 mile cave dive is just too good to pass up having a little fun with. Every one know how difficult it is to even get to 150 miles (I was going to make the attempt once but I couldn't figure out a good way to carry that much line!). 200 is just flat out unbelievable.
