A United States senator criticized the ABC network television series 'Desperate Housewives' Thursday and said their humor was "appaling."

Democratic Senator Leland Yee of San Francisco/San Mateo said As a Senator who represents the largest Filipino community outside of the Philippines, I am appalled that the producers and writers at ABC found this type of humor acceptable."

"As a human being, I am disheartened to see that these stereotypes continue to permeate our airwaves and entertainment media," Yee said.

He added that this desperate attempt at humor is offensive and has no place in the community.

"Filipinos, including those trained outside of the United States, have made invaluable impacts on the medical field, and should be valued, not disparaged," Yee said.

He noted, "While I am pleased to see the network issue an apology, I encourage them to do so publicly during the show’s next broadcast and work with the community to heal the wounds caused by this insulting reference."

Sorry, for the 'Double' coffee induced post!!:dork2:

Hank,
I'll make you a deal you can't refuse if you make it there while we're there!! I gaurantee you'll be impressed. I can't wait to show our bit of PARADISE. BTW, how much gear will you bring?

Does this mean I get three free dives with PanayExplorers? :D

All of us will have complete sets of gear. Boy has tanks in Anani'i but I doubt we'll bring any up north. Have you seen my profile pic? That's in Anani'i on Boy's little bangka....in June this year.

Sorry if I haven't read all the posts and may say something redundant:

1) this was not a slur against a race, or even a nationality, but a "slur" against the educational system of another country. This is not a slur at all, depending upon the accuracy of the assessment. In none of the national debate on this supposed insult have I heard any analysis of the quality of foreign medical schools. Having dealt with physicians in this country educated in those schools, I suspect that they are NOT very good (but that is anecdotal). Thus, saying the Pittsburgh Pirates is a crappy baseball team is not a slur on Pittsburghers, but a provable FACT. Likewise, if Phillippine medical schools stink, then this "discrimination" is not discrimination at all, but reality.

2) The American medical system considers ALL foreign medical schools inferior, or at least of unprovable quality, with the exception of Canada. A person with a foreign medical degree cannot simply enter the country and set up shop without serious scrutiny and testing. Moreover, specialists trained outside the US cannot seek board certification (necessary to practice in many hospitals) unless they REPEAT their training (sometimes years of it) in an American system. This isn't discrimination, but reality. The public would squawk if we simply assumed that any MD granted by any country is equal to an American degree.

3) What if she had said she didn't want a diploma from Bangladesh, or Sierra Leone? Would anyone here go to someone trained in those countries?

There is only one reason for the stringent requirements levied against physicians in the US. ....lawyers. The US legal system has filled court dockets with medical malpractice suits and has driven health care out of the roof! It could be debated who has the best medical system in the world. Who cares really...in the big scheme of things it's just a freakin' TV show that blows big wind! So, anyone seen a blue ring octopus lately?

Give me a break. Slagging off some one's hometown professional sports team isn't the same as slagging off an entire country's medical profession/ educational system.

Answer to the 2nd part of your point #3, probably not... unless they're offering cheap botox shots or plastic surgery...

But to the 1st part of #3, there probably would be some uproar from the Bangladeshi and Sierra Leone community, maybe not as vocal as the Filipino-American community. So why did the show's writers feel the need to single out Filipino doctors?? There in lies the "racial slur", in my opinion. Why didn't they single out another Asian country or some other developing country?

So political correctness has reached the point where all professions in all countries must be presumed equivalent and above reproach? Where professional schools of other countries now have the status of a protected class? So the autos built by the Eastern block countries must be equal to German autos? Or the Russian nuclear plants must be assumed safer than Europe's? Is it a racial slur to say that the economy of Sudan is in worse shape than ours, or Ireland's? No. It is fact. For those who see everything as "racist", however, facts come second. The dirty secret here isn't that Filipino's were insulted. The real reason for the uproar is that the show implied that American doctors are the best, and that we now live in an America-hating environment where we must be ashamed of our economic and technologic superiority.

The simple truth is that medical schools in most other countries are AWFUL, they SUCK. Their standards are low. This isn't racist, it has nothing to do with race. It has to do with culture, economics, politics and a thousand other variables that make some systems better than others.I don't see the Saudis going to the Phillippines for treatment. Everyone knows the Mayo clinic and Sloan Kettering worldwide...name a Phillippine hospital. Give ME a break.

News flash; we now live in a police state where we must apologize for saying that another country's medical care is below our own, even if it is. First amendment, RIP.

Oh, I know...our infant mortality is higher than other countries (those countries that don't count deaths of premies as 'deaths'). And we have a lower life expectancy (the fact that we are obese couch potatoes who like to shoot each other might have more to do with that than our medical care).
