samsung 40t looks like a 21700 to me, as always I reserve the right to be FOS

Me, too! :)

After some more looking, I think you are correct, that it uses 21700 cells.

And, on that assumption, I will point out that the Samsung 40T is a 4000 mAh cell.

And I will point out that the new Dive Rite FX40 light uses 3 x 6000 mAh 21700 cells in it.

So, the 6000 mAh 21700 cells ARE available - at least, to manufacturers. Of course, I don't know if they meet the heat and load requirements that a BlackTip battery pack would need.

Buuut... a BT PTB that was 50% more capacity than the current 12Ah ones would be pretty sweet!

The individual banks are still less than 100wh each.

In theory anything under 16ah would still be legal for air travel
You’d need to test to UN38.3 to be legal for air travel, no?

Can you cite the code?

Not deliberately being flippant but IANAL.

My thoughts are that 2X 15ah modified dewalts get up to ~700wh...that is pretty damn legit for a travel scooter if I can shoehorn them into my piranha housings

I can’t, because I’m not an expert on the topic. But I do know that UN38.3 testing covers a bunch of thermal/shock/vibration testing. I also know that every time I’ve bought weird custom battery packs (assembled packs), they’ve required non-air shipping because they’re not UN38.3 tested. I also had an airline agent ask for the UN38.3 label on my battery once (in fairness, during the Galaxy Note 7 debacle).

All in all, my conclusion is that UN38.3 testing is required for taking an assembled battery on a plane. You may well be able to scrape through with a battery pack assembled inside a Dewalt shell, without anyone being the wiser, but that doesn’t make it ‘legal’.

I'm missing something, I see several 5000mah 21700s with more than 35A ; what's not available?
Cells over 5000mah are not widely available.
Current capacity is largely irrelevant for our applications. DPVs are relatively low draw devices in the grand scheme of things.

Still only 540wh.
Also wouldnt fit in the piranah without a custom PTB. The piranha uses the old 18650 based dewalts.
