I have been to 100 Ft. and unless you get narced You will not know the difference in 100Ft. and 30Ft.
Depends on where you dive. Around my area you'll know ... at 100 feet it's dark, like a night dive ... at 30 feet it's just brown.

Hey Thrillhouse. A lot of these guys are trying to scare you out of diving deep. They make good points even when they are doing it tongue-in-cheek. If you really want to do it, you need to go DIR. That is what DIR is designed for. I don't dive DIR myself since I don't do the crazy dives. I've had my chamber ride and was lucky I made it there. I don't push limits. DIR divers are cocky, arrogant, and can be pretty abrasive. Several of my friends are hardcore DIR. By the way, DIR is Doing It Right. The gear setups folks mentioned are part of this philosophy. It isn't for the new diver. You need some time under your belt and some experience with emergencies not to mention tons of training. If you want to go for it, that's what exploration is all about. Just minimize the risks. If you try deep without the correct training, gear, and respect for and knowlege of the hazards, it will kill you, no doubt about it. Take your time.

May I suggest reading Shadow Divers by Robert Kurson. It will give you a true life look at a deep dive discovery of a German U-boat off the coast of New Jersey. Some of the divers are local to the area that I live in... some of these very divers are dead.
Deep diving isn't a pipe dream, and it is attainable but as mentioned, it is something that requires extensive preparation and education... and many dives to lesser but deep depths with controlled problem solving and a developed skill for logical thinking (non-panic) in following plans.
Little problems become big problems at depth... panic kills just like narcosis does.
Nuff said.

 ... is this a troll, or are you just ... uninformed ??? :shakehead

Oy...can't we all just get along? ;)

A good diver is a good diver no matter what certifying agency turned him/her out, no matter what gear they dive, no matter what their philosophy is so long as it doesn't put them or others in great danger (any more danger than is naturally inherent when a terrestrial mammal breathes air underwater).

Sheesh..can we give it a rest and get back to being a community now?

Cheers,
Austin

EDIT: And BP/W isn't for DIR only...some of us with PADI certs (the shame, eh?) are seriously considering diving it as well. A Bouyancy Compensator Device by any other name......

No troll. What part do you think I'm uninformed on?

No "well informed" instructor makes the comments that you do...

Come on, people. SPECIFICS!!!! What looks wrong to you? I had no intention of turning this ugly. The fact is deep diving can kill you if you don't have the right training, gear, and knowlege. This guy is not ready for the type of tech diving. That's a given. How about telling him the right direction to go if he wants to look into it rather than just saying 'Don't do it. You'll die!' If that's the part you think I have wrong,....

If it is the tongue-in-cheek part, I was referring to the light-hearted comments about Scuba dollars, ex-wives, etc.

Now if I am wrong, be constructive and tell me what you think is wrong. Chances are it is a misread. If not, one of us is wrong and needs to be corrected.

Now, let's try this again.
