Scott.... I am not aware of any 'commercial' deco software outside of those trial programs you mentioned that is free. If you are at a level of diving that is requiring staged deco than the minumal cost for a good deco planner software is well worth it. If you are doing rec. diving and use a modern reputable dive computer than follow it. Anyway you look at it,,,,working deco schd. via longhand and tables is the way you start anyways,,,,and is the foundation to fully understanding the function of the software. Good luck on your dives.

im using charts and a calculator now im just wanting a program to check everything and i like the v-planner but dont want to pay 89 dollers for it i just dont have it to spend right now

GAP used to have a freebie, maybe they still do. I used V-Planner as a freebie for half a year or more before I finally bought it, but it's worth every dime I paid and then some. Ross does a terrific job with it.

Here ya go:

I believe this is "shareware" rather than "freeware." It will work indefinitely but the author would like to be paid.

thank you thats what i was looking for when i sent my computer out for service the wiped my hard drive andeverything i was finding was a 30 day trial

V-Planner is not free. You can download a trial version that will work for 30 days, then it starts to hassle you. The following is quoted directly from the V-Planner site.

[SIZE=-1] V-Planner is a Shareware program. You are granted license to view and evaluate the program free of charge for 30 days. After this period, you are requested to either register the program and pay the registration fee, or to cease using the program and remove it from your computer. After the evaluation period has expired, the program will continue to function normally, but it will begin to nag you. Registration is valid for life and includes any program updates to come. The same registration details may be used to unlock all copies belonging to one diver. e.g. Home computer and laptop. A limit of 4 keys per registration per year applies on Windows and Linux (interchangable). For Pocket PC, 2 per year. All future program updates are free.

Besides, if you're moving into technical diving, $89 is nothing. It's going to get a lot worse. Talk to anyone who does much technical diving at all and you'll find that they have invested tens of thousands of dollars in equipment an training.

I think HL Planner is fully functional without an expiration date, but the software author would like donations.

I second benthic's opinion, $89 is almost free in the tech world. V-planner is a better program in my opinion, and more widely used. If you got your harddrive wiped and had already paid for V-planner, Ross has a thing on hhs' website to get a new software key using the email address the first key was sent to. After getting my hard drive replaced and then another system crash that feature has saved me $180 already! Not that I'm opposed to paying $90 for quality software, I just hate to pay it 3 times for Best Buy's screw up.

Not to mention the cost of gas......... I spent around 600 just last week.... Benthic is right. 89 bucks is nothing compared to some other costs...
