I have to agree with Kimmie. It's not showbiz, or illusion, or magic. It 's somebody who is too stupid and lazy to get a real job and he has tapped into the minds of those who have no life of their own. Commercial says he trained with the seals. All I saw was him running with a stick! Shows how stupid he really is! If he tripped he could poke his eye out with that thing!

lol too stupid and lazy to get a real job? Do you feel that way about all entertainers?

A couple thoughts on this attempt as I suspect he tried to stack the cards in his favor.

1. Oxygen pumped into the head space of the globe tank to allow him to oxygenate his body prior to submerging? I believe the world record breath hold on 100% O2 packing is much higher than 8:58.

2. Static apnea is done on the surface of the water. David's attempt was 3-4 ft under water. Did the slightly elevated PPO2 aid in his attempt?

kimmie one more and you hit 200! post something
Something..................

Well at least he got paid, even though he failed, at his own illusion.

Chaseh:
He's an illusionist, but also performs physical stunts. The main elements of his shows are not illusions, but just him torturing himself in unusual ways.

Or he makes you think he's torturing himself. There was a show on discovery channel about magicians and one magician showed how he would have faked being in that block of ice and it looked pretty easy to fake.

Of course not! I have the highest regard for strippers and pole dancers!:D

Well he's a god to some people but as it's been said before.....

one born every minute :)

geez, he's no god, but I can recognize it as a stunt and not an illusion. I'm sure those free divers could have done it as well, but couldn't organize the spectacle.

No, probably few were there 24/7, but it's Lincoln Center, there are plenty of people around all times of day.

I think Evil Knevil just performed silly stunts as well. The X-Game guys now put his jumps to shame, but he still created a spectacle.

Why's is so unbelievable that he actually did the stunt and it wasn't a trick?

Not that I could, but if it was proven to you that he just did what he appeared to do without tricks, is he then your god?

You wanna see something crazy? Check out http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/6/6_1/272.shtml

Now that's a feat!

He wouldn't be my god regardless. Free divers impress me. When he was in the block of ice he took pee breaks. Since ice isn't exactly clear glass it would have been very easy to replace him with a look alike.

Evil Kneivl broke bones attempting his stunts, Blaine got wet, give me a break :)

He broke bones, meanwhile todays rider do more elaborate jumps in regular competition. They all leave their bikes in mid-air, spin around, etc.

Chaseh:
wow you really are a blaine fan. Take it easy.

Here is the thing, we aren't comparing how great todays bikers are to evil knievel. We're comparing people who actually do stunts to people who, here it comes, pretend to do stunts.

apples and oranges my friend, apples and oranges

I was a bit suprised by this stunt, and the record of 8+ minutes and did a bit of research on it.

You see I was present for the record setting by Robert Foster, in San Rafael. It was a long time ago and occured at the Bermuda Palms motel, San Rafael CA (where I grew up). It was in the late 50s or early 60s it think. I was a little tike at the time and I don't remember the year (I would guess '59 to '64), but it occured durring a local boat show.

He hyperventelated O2 and lay on a lounge chair at the bottom of the pool. From well before the record attempt until well after he was attended. I witnesses the start and the end, but was too bored to watch the whole time. Many others were present.

It was announced in advance and was well covered by press (at least 15 reporters present, plus doctors, etc) at the time. I though it was something like a bit more than 10 minutes(though lately I have heard closer to 13 min), well past what Blaine is attempting. It was documented in the local paper (the Independent Journal), the San Francisco papers (at least the Call-Bulletin and the Examiner) and also made the national press.

It was not 'certified' by AIDA because it was about 30 years before they were created in France. When they started the ignored all previous records, no matter how well documented.
