Apparently, the record is recognised as 8:58, so if he "hits" 9:00, I suppose Guinness will acknowledge it as the new record
He is an illusionist. He might not even be in water. It's a trick, why would anyone recognize this stunt as a world record.

Now if Guinness set up the rules, then, he probably wouldn't last 60 seconds, it would most likely involve.......water..... LOL
 
doesn't matter because he didn't make it! so much for magic and boyhood wonder
 
If he would have made it I would have said it wasn't real. Now that he failed, I believe it may have been a legitimate attempt. In the end, it still is TV!!!
 
i think failing was the idea (kinda) now all his stunts look legit
 
Not making it very well may have been planned too. After all if he'd set the world record there certainly would have been some serious investigation into exactly how he did the stunt, and he's an illusionist, not a free diver.
