Anybody have comments about the scuba divers down at 581' and surfacing quickly?

They would be breathing hypoxic trimix as a bottom gas and use varying percentages in their stages used during descent and ascent. Which from nearly 600' would take a considerable amount of deco.

They would have multiple safety divers in the water at different depths. Each would be capable of a fairly quick ascent to the next shallower safety diver to hand off the free diver.

I would immagine they would also have a stand-by chamber for surface decompression. Standard protocol with any Navy deep diving. And we've all borrowed much from the Navy concerning diving.

I think I read somewhere that the husband of the drowned free diver was getting a lot of criticism because they weren't near a decompression chamber, they were short a usual safety diver, he didn't check the balloon properly (or not at all before she went down....but I don't think she checked her gear either, don't know).
So sad..

There is a book written by Pipin Ferreras named "The Dive" (I think he still holds the record) which describes what No Limits Diving is, history of the sport, and what happened the day his wife Audrey died while trying to beat the record. Not that I'm a free diver, but I recommend reading it. Quite interesting and heart breaking.

Not a Blaine fan but heres my take.

I think it would be easier to do the stunt than to fake it.

Rumor is that the total sale of advertisment time for the two hour show went for 6 million BUT who would watch a show about someone coming out of a sphere for two hours? I wonder if ATOMIC paid for his equipment , notice his reg? Free advertisment.

It had to be "hiped up" some and heard that ABC wanted something extra so he agreed for the breath hold. Thats why they showed the clip about the free diver drowned, just to hype it up.

If you watched him during the breath hold he was not focused. I dont even think he thought he had a chance but had to go threw with it.

I just hope something was learned about the physical effects on the human body being submerged that long. I would also like to see him to make the breath hold attempt again under better circumstances.

It's interesting, anyway. I enjoy his stunts, just as I enjoyed the guy who back-flipped a motorcycle over Ceaser's Palace's fountian last week.

Just as a sidebar, anyone wanna brag on what their personal record is for breathholding? I've gone to 4:17.

I'm sorry, but I'm calling bull that you've held your breath for over 4 minutes. I could see 2, maybe 3 minutes but 4??? If you truly can hold your breath that long you should be Blaine's sidekick. eyebrow

That's very good. I've only held my breath for a few seconds because it seems like too much work. Free divers have my admiration.
