I believe that most of the ruptured "display" cylinders are ones that ruptured during hydro. I wonder if some are ones destined to be scrapped for other reasons then deliberately over-pressurized in the hydro tank for demonstration purposes. There are far more of these around than there have been accidents.

This particular tank was spread out like a peeled banana. Is that how most "display" tanks look?
If it is peeled open, then it was not a hydro failure. Hydro failures are pretty boring. That is why a hydro test uses water and not a compressable medium like air.

the following video shows a hydro failure. from the looks of it, they actually screwed up and had some amount of air in the system. i once worked for a steel company that produced seemless tubing. all tubes were hydro tested. training films of a failure revealed a small pop and then a trickle of water on the floor. boring...
